In summary, a Local Driver primarily operates within a specific area, often for companies transporting goods or passengers locally. Delivery Drivers focus on delivering packages or food, often working for courier or food service companies. While both roles require a valid driver's license, the work environment and industry usage differ slightly, catering to different employment needs and preferences.

What are local drivers?

Local drivers are professional drivers who transport goods or passengers within a specific geographic area, usually within a city or region. Unlike long-haul truck drivers, local drivers typically complete their routes within a single day and return home at the end of their shift. They may operate delivery trucks, vans, or other vehicles depending on the type of cargo or service. Local drivers are responsible for safe driving, timely deliveries, and sometimes customer service or loading and unloading cargo.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Local Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Local Driver, you need a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and knowledge of local routes and traffic regulations. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, vehicle maintenance procedures, and sometimes a commercial driver's license (CDL) are typically required. Reliability, time management, and strong customer service skills set top performers apart in this role. These abilities ensure timely deliveries, safety on the road, and positive interactions with clients or customers.

What are some common challenges faced by local drivers and how can they be managed?

Local drivers often encounter challenges such as navigating heavy traffic, adhering to tight delivery schedules, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Managing these challenges typically involves strong time management, a solid understanding of route planning, and effective communication with dispatchers and customers. Many companies provide GPS tools and ongoing training to help drivers stay efficient and safe on the road, making adaptability and a proactive attitude valuable assets in this role.

What Is the Job of a Local Driver?

As a local driver, you transport people or packages within a town, city, or region. Your specific duties vary depending on the kind of driving you do; for example, taxi cab drivers pick up and drop off passengers, while couriers deliver confidential or time-sensitive material to clients. However, many responsibilities overlap between different sorts of drivers. All local drivers must know the best local routes to and from common destinations and possess customer service skills. Some local drivers use a company vehicle for work, while others, such as ride-share drivers, may lease a car from the company or use their own.

You will report to the Local Dispatcher and operate safely and professionally at all times.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Safely operate a commercial vehicle and follow all company, state, and federal regulations.
  • Load, deliver, and unload shipments; lift up to 100 lbs. independently.
  • Report to work in full uniform and maintain a clean cab and cargo area.
  • Complete all required paperwork for each shipment and submit fuel receipts, labor receipts, and monthly expense reports.
  • Communicate daily with local and regional dispatchers regarding schedules, loads, and deliveries.
  • Report any damage, claims, or issues immediately.
  • Maintain valid driverโ€™s license and UniGroup Van Operator qualification status.
  • Attend required meetings, training programs, and maintain UniGroup University student ID for continued learning.
  • Assist with facility cleanup and equipment inventory control.
  • Support accuracy and quality standards, including maintaining a WTR score of 92% or higher.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • Ability to pass a drug screen, background check, and maintain a clean MVR
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Minimum 6 months of professional driving experience
  • Previous box truck experience required
  • Valid driverโ€™s license
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English
  • Ability to lift 100 lbs. and work in a physically demanding, fast-paced environment
  • Strong verbal communication and customer service skills

Work Environment
  • Exposure to sunlight, dust, dirt, exhaust, fuel fumes, and varying temperatures
  • Frequent bending, lifting, push/pull movements, and standing for extended periods
  • Schedule is typically Mondayโ€“Friday, with occasional nights/weekends based on operational needs

Pay amp; Benefits

We offer competitive hourly pay based on experience, plus a full benefits package:

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life and disability coverage
  • Accident and critical illness insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Paid time off and holidays

Our Culture

At Planes, culture comes first. Our TEAM valuesโ€”Trust, Empowerment, Accountability amp; Meshโ€”guide how we interact with each other and our customers every day. We believe in developing people, encouraging growth, and celebrating success together.
