Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs), GPS navigation systems, and basic vehicle maintenance tools is essential. Strong time management, customer service, and communication skills help drivers manage schedules and interact effectively with clients and dispatchers. Local CDL drivers usually operate within a specific geographic area, allowing them to return home at the end of each shift. Work schedules often include early mornings or late evenings, depending on the employer and the nature of the cargo. Daily routes are generally consistent, allowing drivers to become familiar with their delivery areas, local traffic patterns, and customer locations. However, drivers should be prepared for occasional overtime or schedule changes due to delivery demands or traffic conditions.
