Job description

Under the direction of the Streets Superintendent, this individual is responsible for performing a variety of tasks in the maintenance, operation, and other tasks assigned in the Streets Division. Snow removal is a requirement of this position. Duties include performing maintenance, repair, and construction work in a variety of public works, water, streets wastewater, storm water and related maintenance activities.

Specific work assignments are provided on a daily basis and may be rotated. Work can include the operation of motorized equipment and the expenditure of heavy physical labor. The successful candidate must possess a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by specialized or technical training or shop courses along with a considerable experience performing maintenance, restoration, or repair work, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills: Knowledge and skill in the use of common hand tools, materials, and standard equipment used in maintenance, repair, and construction work, as well as knowledge of the practices, methods, and materials used in maintenance, repair, and construction of public streets and tree/brush removal.

Knowledge of the safety precautions and hazards of the work. and the ability to perform manual labor for extended periods if time, in all weather conditions. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, ability to meet the physical requirements of the position, and the ability to learn a broad range of operational skills.

Qualified applicants should also be able to demonstrate the ability to effectively solve problems and exercise good judgment with outstanding organizational and time management skills, and also be detail oriented with multi-tasking capabilities in a fast paced environment. Previous experience with snow removal, aerial lift equipment and/or previous forestry work desired. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear.

The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. Weekend and/or night hours are required for scheduled and emergency work, including snow/ice control removal activities. Must be able to be scheduled for on-call duties (after-hours call-backs).

Applicant must possess, or have the ability to attain within 6 months of hire date, a valid Illinois Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B driver's license with No Restrictions (Full Air Brakes). The City will provide the training necessary to obtain if needed. The starting hourly rate is $27.91 along with an excellent benefit package including health, dental and life insurance effective on your first day of employment, participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund pension, 10 paid holidays, and vacation and sick hours that are earned on a monthly basis

Full salary range of Maintenance Worker I is $27.91 to $34.32/hour. These hourly rates are based on the May 1, 2025 wage schedule and the City is currently in negotiations for a successor agreement. Offers of employment are subject to successful completion of background check, physical, and drug screen
