Qualifications Manufacturing experience preferred Responsibilities SUMMARY The Utility Worker handles the replenishment tasks so that the production operators can focus on the value-added tasks that make products. The role has a prescribed set of tasks to keep materials in stock at the point of use in the production area. They also maintain stock levels of packaging material and alert supervisors when more items are needed to be ordered. Utility Worker follows a process when making rounds to take finish goods from the work area, initial packaging of finished goods and bringing them to the next location. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required of the Utility Worker. Materials & Products -Uses a wide variety of equipment ranging from office machines to production floor equipment. -May be a skilled operator at many work stations and capable of stepping in during machine changeovers or production / assembly line changes making it a fast and smooth transition. -Uses mechanical aids for moving product or equipment such as fork lifts, stackers and pallet jacks -Uses computer programs, reads work orders and many small hand tools and equipment in the assigned areas. -Possesses a thorough knowledge of all materials, products and tooling required in the assigned area in order to anticipate, identify and retrieve and provide assistance in a timely fashion. -Understands the production process, machines and worker capabilities in order to facilitate work flow and ensure production time-lines. Equipment -Uses fork truck and pallet jacks when moving raw and finished materials to operators and for loading/unloading trucks. -Uses carousel and core cut machines as required by individual work orders. -Use small hand tools. Procedures -Utilizes fork truck to obtain large, heavy (100 lb. – 2500 lb.), raw materials and cores from the warehouse based on pending work orders and delivers to appropriate machine. Requires moving forklift within tight spaces. -Unloads materials from fork lift onto a push cart, moves cart by hand and prepares rolls to be loaded on coating and converting machines by removing end plates and plastic. -Manages inventory through automated system, Queen Anne Drive (QAD), by scanning bar codes prior to and following movement of product. -Monitors machine production and pending work orders to determine appropriate movement of product by removing material from storage and placing in staging areas. -Moves finished product by hand or with assistance of fork lift to shipping area or warehouse for next step in finishing process. -Participates in weekly cycle count to verify inventory. -Restock packaging area with boxes, cores, pallets, etc. that are used by other utility workers or operators. Initiates re-ordering when low on supplies through supervisor or supply chain -Weighs and disposes of scrap bins when necessary. -May assist in receiving/shipping by unloading trucks and crating finished goods -Detects and eliminates or minimizes safety hazards. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING TIME -A minimum of high school degree or equivalent is required. -Training time is typically 3-6 months to be proficient in all phases of the job to work independently. ACCOUNTABILITY Complexity -Utility Worker is under general supervision of the immediate supervisor, who makes assignments orally or in writing. Utility Workers may plan and lay out their work using work orders and other specifications. The supervisor reviews work for adherence to directions, SOPs and accepted trade practices. Utility Operators may have the responsibility for completing projects or work assignments as required by the supervisor. They must be self-sufficient and work independently as well as part of a team. -Caution must be exercised in the handling of materials, equipment and tools. -May inspect contents of all shipments & takes count, checks for damages, makes entries into systems for record keeping and notifies purchasing and other appropriate individuals -Maintains accurate inventory records, enters and references stock levels using computer inventory system. -Responsible for using forklift and pallet truck to complete driver assignments. Work requires a high degree of accuracy and caution moving material and goods; work assignments involve a high degree of care and skill to prevent damage to goods, materials and injury to others. Latitude of Judgment -Receives specific work instruction from work orders and escalates any concerns or discrepancies in the quantity for shipment or the amount received to Supervisor. -Must be able to work with others in the department as well as outside department to determine best approach to finish tasks or responsibilities Supervisory responsibility -This job does not have any supervisory responsibilities. WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a Utility Worker encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Physical Demands/Efforts -Will carry objects of varying weights, sizes, and shapes, normally, moderate physical exertion is expended to handle product / material that is less than 25 pounds and regularly handles objects weighing (50 pounds) occasionally carry for considerable distances. -Required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, kneel, bend, and work in cramped positions while moving material and goods. -Occasionally they assist other workers and may climb and work from ladders exposing them to the possibility of serious injury from slipping and falling. Mental & Visual Demands -Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Work Environment -While performing the duties of this job within the manufacturing environment, the employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and vehicles. -The employee is occasionally exposed to heat, fumes, or airborne dust. -The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Various PPE devices & equipment such as gloves, safety shoes, hearing protection and glasses may be required.
