Job description

About Literacy Mid-South

For more than 50 years, Literacy Mid-South (LMS) has remained committed to one core belief: literacy changes lives. Founded in 1974 to help adults strengthen essential reading skills, LMS has expanded to serve learners of all ages across the Mid-South.

Our mission is to ensure that individuals and families have access to the literacy skills needed to thrive-academically, economically, and personally. Through direct programming and regional collaboration, LMS works to break cycles of limited literacy and expand opportunity for generations to come.

At LMS, literacy is not simply an educational outcome-it is a pathway to empowerment, equity, and long-term community transformation.

Position Summary

The Tutor901 Lead Tutor plays a critical role in supporting the successful day-to-day operation of Tutor901 tutoring sessions at designated school sites. The Lead Tutor monitors tutoring sessions, supports tutors with lesson delivery and student needs, facilitates communication between tutors and the Tutor901 Program Manager and/or Tutor Coordinator, assists with program data collection and reporting, and helps ensure tutors have the materials and resources needed to deliver high-quality literacy instruction.

The Lead Tutor serves as a liaison between tutors and Tutor901 program leadership and is expected to model professionalism, reliability, sound judgment, and effective communication. When a Substitute Tutor cannot be secured, the Lead Tutor may also be assigned to provide small-group reading instruction to students. Tutor901's instructional model includes in-person tutoring during the school day, consistent student groups, and ongoing training and support.

Key Responsibilities

Session Supervision & Tutor Support

  • Monitor tutoring sessions to help ensure they operate smoothly and in accordance with Tutor901 expectations, procedures, and established guidelines.

  • Help ensure students arrive at the tutoring space on time and are prepared to begin their sessions.
  • Help ensure students return to their classrooms promptly at the conclusion of tutoring sessions.
  • Support tutors in appropriately addressing student behavioral concerns.
  • Assist tutors with lesson delivery, instructional materials, and implementation of Tutor901 programming.
  • Administer and/or collect occasional student assessments as directed by Tutor901 program leadership.
  • Tutor small groups of students when a substitute tutor cannot be secured, following Tutor901's established instructional model and curriculum.

Communication

  • Serve as a primary point of contact between tutors and the Tutor901 Program Manager and/or Tutor Coordinator for immediate program needs, questions, or concerns.
  • Maintain clear and open communication channels so tutor questions and concerns can be addressed promptly.
  • Communicate relevant observations, challenges, and program needs to Tutor901 leadership in a timely and professional manner.
  • Follow established communication protocols and escalate matters to the Tutor901 Program Manager when appropriate.
  • Refrain from independently communicating with school staff, teachers, or administrators unless specifically authorized by the Tutor901 Program Manager.

Data Reporting & Collection

  • Prepare accurate and detailed summaries of tutoring sessions, including attendance, instructional topics covered, and notable observations or concerns.
  • Submit required session reports to the Tutor901 Program Manager within established timelines.
  • Enter and maintain accurate student attendance information.
  • Assist with the collection and documentation of program and student data as requested.
  • Maintain confidentiality when handling student, tutor, school, and program information.

Supply Management

  • Assist with the delivery, distribution, organization, and retrieval of Tutor901 supplies and instructional materials at assigned school sites.
  • Help ensure tutors and students have the necessary materials available for scheduled tutoring sessions.
  • Communicate supply shortages or material needs to Tutor901 program leadership.
  • Transport program supplies to or between school sites when needed.

Liaison & Program Support

  • Serve as a liaison between tutors and the Tutor901 Program Manager and/or Tutor Coordinator.
  • Communicate relevant tutor feedback, questions, and program information to Tutor901 leadership.
  • Facilitate communication regarding school schedules, tutoring logistics, training needs, instructional support, and other program matters.
  • Help reinforce Tutor901 procedures and expectations while directing performance or personnel concerns to the Tutor901 Program Manager.
  • Perform other program-related duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications
