Department Department of Nursing - 273300 Primary Purpose of Position
The Simulation Operations Specialist is responsible for assisting the Department of Nursing in Appalachian State University's Beaver College of Health Sciences in all related healthcare simulation labs, simulation activities, and innovative educational practices related to healthcare simulation technologies. In collaboration with the Director of Healthcare Simulation & Innovative Learning, the Simulation Operations Specialist will contribute by providing a safe, confidential, and welcoming learning simulation learning experience to the Department of Nursing programs as well as other internal and external stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a two year technical college with a major in computer science, information technology or related area and one year in the information technology field related to the position's role; or graduation from a four year college or university and one year experience in the information technology field related to the position's role; or graduation from a four year college or university with a major in computer science or information technology or related degree. Related information technology experience may be substituted year for year for the required education.
Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License/Certification Required
Preferred Certifications:
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) certification;
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) certification;

Essential Job Functions
Job Duties & Responsibilities include:
  • Providing daily operation, maintenance and upgrades for clinical and simulation equipment;
  • Maintaining sim and lab inventory; requiring a high degree of autonomy and independent judgment;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work with faculty, staff and students in simulation experiences;
  • Developing, implementing and evaluating protocols and policies related to simulation and learning lab operations under the direction of and in collaboration with the Simulation Director;
  • In collaboration with the Simulation Director, schedule regular site visits with external vendors for troubleshooting and regular equipment maintenance and updates.
  • Maintain a current, complete, and accurate inventory of all clinical laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with the regular purchasing and documentation of all simulation equipment and lab supplies, in collaboration with lab faculty and the Simulation Director.
  • Facilitate training sessions to ensure that faculty members are knowledgeable to provide basic operation of all clinical equipment.
  • Collect and analyze data related to simulation usage and evaluation.
  • In collaboration with the Simulation Director, submit annual outcome and evaluation reports of lab utilization and activity.
  • Operate both simulators and AV recording equipment during student learning and faculty training scenarios.
  • Set up and maintain labs as needed by internal and external stakeholders.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic hardware/software issues
  • Accomplished using Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Media Products
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of and experience with patient simulation equipment and related multimedia equipment
  • Familiarity with basic anatomy and physiology
  • Ability to understand basic inventory and material storage procedures
  • Knowledge of relevant health professions principles and practices
  • Ability to safely operate common medical equipment and associated resources
  • Understanding and application of universal precautions when working with biological materials

This position must have a knowledge base about the technology associated with simulation lab training. In addition, the position must have a broad understanding of the simulation lab technical systems, including computer hardware and software, LAN equipment and switching/signaling, networking, server-client relationships, A/V equipment. Support experience with high-fidelity human patient simulators and other simulation-related technology is especially important for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 1-year experience with health-related learning technology/simulation;
  • Experience with video capture and learning management systems (LMS) software package (e.g., CAE Learning Space, B-Line);
  • Experience in higher education;
  • Relevant clinical experience and or/medical knowledge.

Technical Support
This position should have the ability to identify trends and make suggestions for technical modifications to solve future problems. This person works collaboratively with the Director of Healthcare Simulation & Innovation, faculty, and other existing technology support team members. They will respond to simulation lab technical service requests, and must be available to assist faculty and students by providing simulation instructional technology support.

Technical Solution Development
This position will document and clearly articulate solutions. This position must also be able to organize and develop ad hoc support plans and direct efforts to quickly resolve unforeseen, immediate issues. The simulation labs are in continual operation and equipment uptime is critical. This position is responsible for developing support solutions to ensure that the labs training environment is consistently available for students and instructors. This position is expected to think strategically and creatively and to develop technical support protocols that provide optimal lab functionality and availability.

In addition, the position must have a broad understanding of the simulation lab technical systems, including computer hardware and software, LAN equipment and switching/signaling, networking, server-client relationships, A/V equipment.
