What is a live in?

A Live-In job typically refers to a position where an employee resides at their workplace, often in a private household or care facility. Common roles include caregivers, nannies, housekeepers, or companions who provide support and services in exchange for accommodation and salary. Live-In employees usually have scheduled working hours but may also offer on-call assistance as needed. The arrangement allows for a close, continuous level of service while providing the employee with a place to live. Specific duties, compensation, and time off vary depending on the employer's agreement.

What are the typical daily routines and responsibilities for a live in?

A Live In role typically involves a mix of caregiving or household duties, such as assisting with personal care, preparing meals, light housekeeping, and sometimes providing transportation or companionship. Your schedule may vary depending on the needs of the household, but you can expect to be available for tasks throughout the day, with agreed-upon breaks and personal time. Flexibility is important, as routines can change due to medical appointments, school activities, or other family needs. Many Live In positions offer the opportunity to form meaningful connections with those you care for while gaining valuable experience in home management and personal support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the live in position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live In (such as a live-in caregiver, nanny, or housekeeper), you need hands-on experience in caregiving, household management, and possibly childcare or eldercare, often with references or relevant training. Familiarity with communication tools (such as mobile devices) and, in some roles, first aid or CPR certifications are commonly required. Compassion, reliability, flexibility, and strong interpersonal skills will help you build trust with the household and adapt to varying needs. These abilities are crucial for maintaining a safe, supportive, and smoothly running living environment for the individuals or families you support.

About the Family & Their Ideal Nanny / Family Assistant
"Before our recent move from Washington, DC to Rancho Santa Fe, we had the most wonderful long-term nanny who truly became part of our family. She was my right hand, particularly because my husband travels nearly every week for work, and we are hoping to find someone here who can fill a very similar role and stay with our family for many years.
We have three children, including an 8-month-old baby and two older children who are in school during the day. The primary childcare responsibility during school hours is caring for our baby. I generally use the school day to work a little, exercise, run errands, and recharge so that I can be very present with the older children once they are home from school.
Our previous nanny was wonderful because she was not only an exceptional caregiver, but also a true partner in keeping our household running smoothly. She naturally took ownership of children's/family laundry, tidying and organizing, keeping the kitchen and children's spaces in order, preparing healthy meals and snacks, and noticing what needed to be done without always having to be directed. If we were traveling, she would even think to start packing the kids' suitcases, just as one example. Having her manage these day-to-day household responsibilities allowed me to focus much more of my time and energy on the children.
Just as important to us is personality and demeanor. Because this person will spend so much time with our family, we are looking for someone whose company we genuinely enjoy and who brings a calm, positive presence into our home. Our ideal nanny is exceptionally reliable, trustworthy, safe, professional, intelligent, kind, cautious, patient, thoughtful, warm and loving. We particularly value someone who has good judgment, is proactive, notices details, communicates well, and takes genuine pride in her work.
We are also a very tidy, health-conscious household. We prioritize nutritious food for our children and generally try to maintain a clean, organized and health-conscious home, so someone who naturally shares those values would be an especially good fit.
Above all, we are hoping to find someone we can trust wholeheartedly and welcome into our family for the long term. We are not looking for someone who views this simply as a temporary job. We would love to find someone who wants to grow with our family and be an important, valued part of our children's lives for many years.
We are a Type A, detail-oriented family, and the right person will genuinely thrive in that kind of environment. We are hardworking, organized and take pride in doing things well, and we hope to find someone who brings that same exceptional work ethic, attention to detail and sense of responsibility to our home.
While we have high standards and care deeply about things being done thoughtfully and well, we are also incredibly loyal and generous employers. We treat the people who work with our family with tremendous respect, appreciation and care. Our hope is to find someone who will become part of our family, and in return, we will support her and take very good care of her for the long term.
Thank you so much for your help with our search!"
