Job Title: Utility Locator
Reports To: Construction Manager

Job Summary:
As the Utility Locator, you will ultimately be responsible for locating and marking underground utilities to support safe excavation and construction activities. You will use digital mapping tools and specialized locating equipment to identify underground infrastructure and help prevent damages. As the Utility Locator, your customers are internal crews, contractors, and utility clients, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through safety, accuracy, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):
• Utilize mapping tools, location data, and locating equipment to identify underground utilities, including electric, gas, telephone, and communication lines
• Mark utility locations using paint, flags, and approved utility marking methods
• Maintain company vehicles and locating equipment to ensure operational readiness
• Perform locating duties in standard and high-risk environments while maintaining safety compliance
• Travel overnight to job sites as required and perform work in all weather conditions
• Complete physical fieldwork and support day-to-day operations safely and efficiently
• Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs
Required Qualifications:
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• Valid unrestricted driver's license required
• OSHA 10 certification required
• CDL preferred
Experience
• Minimum 2 years of recent underground utility locating experience
• Experience in utility, telecom, excavation, or construction environments preferred
Skills and Abilities
• Basic computer skills
• Ability to safely and effectively operate locating equipment
• Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Ability to lift and move 50-150 lbs. as needed
• Ability to stand and walk long distances over uneven terrain
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience locating electric, gas, telecom, and communication utilities
• CDL certification
• Experience in high-risk utility or construction environments
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, climb, and twist for extended periods
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Ability to work around heavy equipment and active construction zones
• Ability to maintain visual and audible awareness of surroundings for safe coordination
• Must be able to wear required PPE including hard hat, safety boots, safety glasses, and other applicable safety gear
