Position Overview

Seeking an experienced Level III NICU Registered Nurse for a primarily NICU-based assignment. The ideal candidate must be comfortable floating between NICU, PICU, Peds, and Nursery based on unit needs. The Peds unit cares for patients up to 21 years old.

First-time travelers are welcome, provided they have the required Level III NICU experience and clinical skills.

Required Certifications

Clinical Experience Required

Candidates should have experience with:

  • Level III NICU patients
  • Intubated patients and mechanical ventilation
  • Oscillators
  • NCPAP, Bubble CPAP, NIMV, and high-flow oxygen
  • OG/NG tubes
  • IV insertion
  • Central lines
  • Critical thinking in a high-acuity neonatal environment

Common diagnoses include: prematurity, hypoglycemia, sepsis, neonatal withdrawal, congenital anomalies, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and patients requiring surgical or cardiology transfers.

Nurse-to-Patient Ratios
  • Level 1: 1:1 or 1:2
  • Level 2: 1:3
  • Level 3: 1:4

RNs are not routinely required to titrate drips. Common titratable medications include dopamine and dobutamine. No sedation drips are typically used.

Unit & Staffing
  • Charge nurses may occasionally take a low-acuity assignment.
  • Two nurse aides are available on day shift, with one assigned to each room.
  • Main room typically houses 12–16 babies.
  • House staff/attending coverage is available 24/7.
  • Neonatologist is on call overnight and rounds in the morning.
  • Telemetry is available; there are no monitor techs, and RNs are expected to interpret strips.
Scheduling
  • 13 shifts over a 4-week schedule
  • Travelers provide availability, and the unit will make every effort to accommodate requests.
  • Block scheduling is not guaranteed.
  • Travelers should remain flexible and help fill gaps in the permanent schedule.
  • Excessive call-ins are taken seriously and may result in termination.
  • Every other weekend required, with some flexibility based on unit needs.
  • Holiday: Usually 1 holiday per contract, with some flexibility.
  • Potential opportunity for overtime; call/standby may be available.

Core staff may also be expected to attend deliveries.

Orientation
  • 2 days in the NICU
