Job description

Under general direction, performs the work of painting traffic markings; makes traffic signs with proper equipment; paints, installs and maintains traffic and street signs throughout the City; performs closely related duties as required. Examples of Duties Representative Duties Operates center-line paint machine and other spraying apparatus; paints or stencils traffic directional signs or symbols; paints and stripes barricades, guard rails, streets, curbs and miscellaneous related signs; cuts and prepares stencils and makes painting templates; sands, buffs, re-letters and manufactures street signs; letters and numbers automotive equipment, parking location signs and directional signs; installs and maintains traffic and street name signs; operates post-hole digger, driver, refurbishes signs, concrete mixer, sandblaster, vacuum applicator and truck; sets sign posts and barricades; assists in the installation of electric traffic signals; maintains work records; operates concrete saw; fabricates barricades; finishes cement; operates grinder for removing traffic markings, and performs lay-out of new streets for striping. Organizational Responsibilities Positions in this Class are assigned to the Public Works Department, Streets Division.

Typical Qualifications Education and Experience High school graduate, PLUS three (3) years' verifiable experience in street maintenance, repair, construction and painting. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment and safety measures used in spray, brush and traffic painting, and in traffic sign installation; ability to follow oral directions related to the work; to read and comprehend written statements such as work orders; to work with others in a small crew; to properly clean, oil and maintain spray apparatus, brushes, stencils, sandblaster, vacuum applicator, and other job-related equipment. License A valid California Driver's License, Class C, have and maintain.
