Job description

Our company is dedicated to delivering safe, dependable services to our customers and has been operating under the same management for over 10 years. While the towing industry is often dynamic, Buchanan Marine LP is a transportation organization that provides a reliable work environment for our employees with consistent time on and time off the boat. While our business has grown tremendously since the beginning, we still operate with the same 'small-company' family feel. Buchanan Marine LP is looking for a similarly minded, career-driven individual with a strong work ethic and stable sea legs who is comfortable working and living aboard our tugs for two weeks at a time (followed by two weeks off).

This is a Union position aboard the Tug Alexandra and Dredge Eleanor. An ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate strong leadership qualities, be eager to learn, and have a career mentality. Since our company prefers to grow from within, our Captains are promoted from our Mates. Buchanan Marine LP offers competitive day rates and benefits, including healthcare, dental, long-term disability, life insurance, and 401(k) matching opportunities. As a union position, benefits are per a collective bargaining agreement.

General Expectations

As a Mate, you will work and live aboard the Tug Alexandra and Dredge Eleanor during your on-hitch period (2 weeks on / 2 weeks off). Basic expectations and responsibilities include navigating, towing operations, basic computer literacy, and general good seamanship.

You are a good fit for our fleet if you:

  • Are looking for a career not just a job
  • Have strong leadership and verbal communications skills
  • Enjoy problem-solving
  • Work well in a team setting
  • Are willing to work hard and learn from others
  • Understand safety is a priority

To qualify, you will need:

  • TWIC
  • MMC with Medical Certificate
    • Mate of Towing Near Coastal or Oceans
    • Radar Endorsement
  • Valid Driver’s License
