Job description

At Suncor, we produce and provide energy.

When you join Suncor, you become part of a company that has built a solid foundation for both business and employee success. We are a place where talented people thrive. As part of our team, you play a vital role in delivering energy we all rely on, and you'll make a meaningful impact in the communities where we live and work.

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Specialist Geoscientist to join our In Situ Development team, supporting near-term SAGD drilling and pad execution across our operated In Situ assets.

In this role, you will bring a strong technical foundation in thermal oil development, with the judgment and collaboration skills needed to support pad planning, well execution, brownfield optimization, and future development opportunities. While the position is open to intermediate or senior candidates, the ideal individual will have demonstrated experience in SAGD drilling operations and the ability to provide confident geoscience support in a fast-paced development environment.

What we offer:

We recognize your contribution and offer a range of rewards and development opportunities designed to support your success. Benefits/perks listed below may vary depending on the nature of your employment with Suncor and the region where you work.

  • Strong compensation: we offer competitive compensation, regional-based uplifts, annual bonuses, and long-term financial rewards. We also help you save for your future by offering pension programs, and savings plans with company matching
  • Benefits: utilize an employee assistance program and comprehensive company-paid health, dental, and vision benefits for you and your family to support your mental, physical, and financial well-being
  • Generous time-off: enjoy generous paid vacation time and personal time-off to recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance
  • Talent development programs: Internal mobility, succession planning, and employee training and development programs are just a few ways we're dedicated to your development

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geoscience, or a related discipline
  • Professional designation with APEGA as a P.Geo., or eligibility for registration
  • A minimum of 12 years of experience with In Situ developments with significant geoscience experience in the oil and gas industry
  • Direct experience supporting horizontal drilling operations, with strong preference for SAGD well development
  • Experience working on pad development programs, including well planning, subsurface risk identification, and drilling support
  • Proficient in geoscience interpretation and modeling using Petrel, with a preference for directional drilling in StarSteer
  • Strong subsurface interpretation, mapping, correlation, and reservoir characterization skills
  • Strong analytical, communication, and integration skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and contribute to technical and development decisions
  • Experience supporting regulatory applications, reserves processes, business planning, or development evaluations is considered an asset

Don't have all the qualifications listed? That's ok! Apply anyway. We acknowledge the value of transferrable skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Support planning and execution of horizontal SAGD wells, including pad development, well placement, subsurface risk assessment, and operational geoscience support
  • Act as a central geoscience contact for drilling-related activities, helping integrate subsurface interpretation with development, drilling, reservoir, and operations requirements
  • Work closely with wellsite personnel to support active drilling operations, including occasional on-call responsibilities as required
  • Contribute to delineation, appraisal, and longer-range resource evaluation to support future development
  • Identify key geological uncertainties, risks, and opportunities, and communicate implications clearly to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in geoscience workflows, drilling support practices, and development integration
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior team members where appropriate

Location and other key details:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 - 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines, and the pay band will be based on years of experience and scope of work

Think we are a fit? Apply now!
