This position is located in the Multimedia Group (MMG), at the Library of Congress. The Multimedia Group has responsibility for digital creation and reformatting support to the Library's service units. Specific services of the Multimedia Group include: the operation of professional audio and video recording equipment; digital format conversion; video capture, digitization and editing; and presentation integration. The group maintains equipment, software, and facilities necessary to the performance of these tasks. The group offers complete production cycle services and assists service unit personnel in the development of local capabilities. The manager and staff in this group work to satisfy customer requirements, to provide outstanding customer service, and to represent customer interests. The incumbent of this position serves as an Audio Production Specialist who is responsible for analyzing, defining, and specifying audio production requirements; and uses audio production hardware and software to support the capture, editing, and presentation of programs originating from the Library.
A routine validated pre-placement physical examination performed by the Library's Health Services Division is required as a condition of assignment to this position. This position requires regular recurring physical examinations every 3 years.
Working independently or as part of a team, the incumbent serves as an expert in audio amplification for meetings, events, conferences, concerts, and other live events. Responsible for mixing live audio for front-of-house positions, monitor positions, and controlling room environments. Responsible for operating both portable and fixed audio amplification equipment. Responsible for the configuration and calibration of PA systems, including line arrays, subwoofers, fills, and wireless systems. Performs system checks, sound checks, rehearsals, and operational adjustments during events. Coordinates with video production staff & external media to deliver accurate audio signals to broadcast cameras. Collaborates with video production staff to configure and calibrate a range of display equipment, including video monitors and projectors. Diagnoses and resolve technical issues quickly in high-pressure environments. Collaborate with production staff, event staff, speakers, and artists on event requirements. Uses judgment in selecting the proper equipment, taking into consideration user requirements, environmental constraints, and material characteristics. Edits audio content using the appropriate and approved software. Communicates orally and in writing to both technical and non-technical staff concerning audio activities. Research hardware to meet existing and anticipated needs. Makes recommendations for purchases of specialized hardware and associated software. Determines the most meaningful way of structuring and conveying information to the given audience.
Analyzes the merits of equipment used. Analyzes computer equipment already in use to evaluate the relative merits of the equipment for meeting immediate and future needs. Sets forth alternatives, weigh costs and benefits, and makes recommendations for modification, replacement, or new purchase. Coordinates the maintenance and replacement of hardware which may include preparing, delivering, installing, and configuring production hardware. Evaluates automation requirements of individual users or workgroups. Performs requirements analysis, feasibility studies, cost-benefit analysis, or an analysis of alternatives.
Advises on the technical advantages and disadvantages of various formats, styles, media, and methods of reproduction, suggesting those that will best meet the information objectives of each project.
Monitors and evaluates contractor policies, practices, procedures, techniques, methods and management controls. Provides technical evaluations of multimedia products and makes recommendations to management. Participate in the review of multimedia applications developed by the vendor. Performs technical work related to performance and capacity management.

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid at step one of the grade.
