Job description

JOB SUMMARY
The Press Operator plays a vital role in our print production process by overseeing the operation and maintenance of our offset press. This position requires a high level of technical skill and attention to detail to ensure the production of high-quality printed materials. The Press Operator is responsible for setting up the press, loading plates, adjusting ink and water balance, monitoring print quality throughout the run, and performing routine maintenance to ensure optimal performance and minimize downtime. This role is essential in meeting client expectations, maintaining production schedules, and upholding our commitment to delivering exceptional print products.

Responsibilities and Activities:
  • Sets up machine and maintains quality throughout the run per individual job.
  • Changes press plates, blankets and cylinders as needed.
  • Cleans inks fountains, plates and changes units as needed.
  • Runs machine at optimal speed to meet production standards.
  • Performs adjustments on machine to ensure maximum productivity.
  • Performs regular quality checks on all components to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Recalibrates equipment as required.
  • Sets color.
  • Communicates job status and production concerns/issues during shift transition to ensure optimal productivity for the following shift.
  • Notifies Team Lead of quality issues.
  • Works with Team Lead to resolve concerns.
  • Ensures safety practices are followed.
  • Tracks job counts, make readies, waste as instructed with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Spots defects in the print and corrects to essential functions of the job.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as required to ensure the team's success.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • High school diploma or GED.

Work Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in offset printing as press operator.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of printing principles, color management, and print finishing processes.
  • Knowledge of mechanical operations and processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret job instructions.
  • Ability to work with both computers and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of predictive and productive maintenance systems.
  • Ability to monitor production equipment for speed and quality.
  • Able to stand for long periods, bend, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Able to move and lift 25 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally.
  • Able to stand on concrete for 10-12 hours.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to follow written and verbal instructions. Willingness to learn, develop new skills, and be accountable for quality.
  • Effective communicator with good interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Adherence to safety procedures (including lock-out/tag-out and HazCom) and departmental SOPs.
