Vice President, Real Estate Accounting About the Opportunity

A well-capitalized and rapidly growing real estate investment and development organization is seeking an experienced Vice President of Real Estate Accounting to lead the accounting, financial reporting, and operational finance functions for a diverse commercial real estate portfolio.

Reporting directly to executive leadership, this individual will serve as the senior accounting leader for a portfolio consisting of operating assets, development projects, and joint venture investments. This highly visible position will partner closely with ownership, executive management, institutional investors, lenders, auditors, and external business partners.

The Vice President will provide strategic leadership across all accounting and reporting functions while helping drive business performance, process improvements, financial transparency, and long-term growth initiatives.

This opportunity is ideal for a seasoned real estate accounting executive who enjoys both strategic leadership and hands-on oversight of complex accounting, reporting, and investor-related activities.


Key Responsibilities Executive Leadership & Business Partnership
  • Serve as the senior accounting leader for the real estate platform and provide strategic financial guidance to executive leadership.
  • Partner with ownership and senior management to support growth initiatives, capital deployment decisions, acquisitions, dispositions, and development activities.
  • Evaluate financial performance and provide recommendations to improve operational efficiency and portfolio returns.
  • Support organizational growth through process enhancements, reporting improvements, and scalable financial infrastructure.
Financial Reporting & Accounting Oversight
  • Lead all accounting and financial reporting activities for a diverse portfolio of real estate assets and investment structures.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Oversee the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
  • Direct general ledger activities, account reconciliations, cash management reporting, and financial analysis.
  • Ensure consistency, accuracy, and transparency of financial reporting across all entities and investments.
Investor, Joint Venture & Stakeholder Reporting
  • Serve as the primary accounting and reporting contact for institutional investors, capital partners, joint venture stakeholders, and lending institutions.
  • Oversee the preparation and distribution of investor reporting packages, financial statements, capital account reporting, and investment performance analyses.
  • Ensure compliance with partnership agreements, joint venture structures, debt agreements, and investor reporting requirements.
  • Support capital calls, distributions, financing transactions, and investor communications.
  • Present financial information and performance metrics to executive leadership, ownership groups, and external stakeholders.
Development & Project Accounting
  • Provide oversight of accounting and reporting related to active development and capital projects.
  • Ensure accurate capitalization of project costs and compliance with applicable accounting standards.
  • Partner with development and operational teams to monitor project budgets, forecasts, and financial performance.
  • Review project-level reporting and provide insights regarding investment returns and project profitability.
Planning, Forecasting & Performance Analysis
  • Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning initiatives.
  • Develop portfolio-level cash flow projections and financial models.
  • Analyze operating results, trends, and key performance indicators.
  • Deliver actionable financial insights and recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Support strategic decision-making through meaningful financial analysis and reporting.
Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls
  • Lead relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, lenders, and other professional service providers.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls and financial governance practices.
  • Coordinate annual audits and support all regulatory and compliance requirements.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of accounting professionals.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture focused on accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Establish performance objectives, succession planning initiatives, and professional development opportunities.
  • Drive adoption of best practices, technology solutions, and process improvements across the accounting organization.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • CPA designation strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 15+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience within commercial real estate, real estate investment, development, REIT, or related industries.
  • Minimum 7+ years of leadership experience managing accounting and finance teams.
  • Deep understanding of GAAP, real estate accounting, partnership accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Experience supporting institutional investors, joint venture partners, lenders, and external stakeholders.
  • Proven success overseeing complex legal entity structures and multi-entity reporting environments.
  • Strong financial systems experience; Yardi experience is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to present financial information effectively to executive leadership, ownership groups, and investment partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, improve processes, and support organizational growth initiatives.
