What is a live in nanny?

A Live-In Nanny is a childcare provider who resides with the family they work for, offering full-time support in caring for children. Their responsibilities typically include feeding, bathing, engaging in educational activities, and assisting with household tasks related to the children. This arrangement often provides more flexibility for parents, as the nanny is available for early mornings, evenings, or emergencies. In exchange for their services, live-in nannies usually receive room and board in addition to a salary. The specific duties and expectations depend on the family's needs and the nanny's contract.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a live in nanny?

To thrive as a Live In Nanny, you need childcare experience, basic first aid and CPR certification, and a proven ability to manage household routines. Familiarity with schedules, meal planning, and child safety protocols, as well as use of communication logs or childcare apps, is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, patience, reliability, and cultural sensitivity help build positive relationships with families. These skills ensure children's well-being, seamless household operations, and trust between nanny and employer.

What are the typical working hours and expectations for live in nannies?

Live-in nannies usually have more flexible schedules than live-out nannies, often covering early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends depending on the family's needs. While you generally have room and board provided, it's common for families to outline defined 'on-duty' hours, along with agreed-upon time off for rest and personal activities. Responsibilities can range from supervising children's daily routines, assisting with homework, meal preparation, to light housekeeping related to the children. Open communication with your employer about duties and boundaries is key to maintaining a healthy work-life balance in this role.

How do I become a live-in nanny?

To become a live-in nanny, you typically need relevant childcare experience, a clean background check, and sometimes CPR or first aid certification. You should search for job listings, prepare a resume highlighting your childcare skills, and be ready to discuss your availability and experience during interviews. Having good communication skills and flexibility is also important for this role.

How much do live-in nannies earn?

Live-in nannies typically earn between $400 and $800 per week, depending on experience, responsibilities, and location. They often receive room and board as part of their compensation and may earn additional benefits or bonuses for extended hours or specialized skills.

Is being a live-in nanny worth it?

Being a live-in nanny can be worth it for those seeking a stable position with room and board included, as well as the opportunity to develop childcare skills. However, it often involves long hours, limited personal space, and a high level of responsibility, which should be considered when evaluating its value.

Overview

A warm, easygoing family in Hanover, New Hampshire is seeking an experienced, dependable infant nanny for a contract position beginning November 5, 2026 and running through early July 2027. The family's son will be approximately three and a half months old at the start date. This is a nurturing-first role, and the family's highest priority is finding a highly experienced, reliable caregiver who will bond with the baby and become a trusted, consistent presence in his day.

The home is in a rural setting roughly forty minutes' walk from town, with snowy winter driving conditions, so a reliable vehicle and confidence driving in New England weather are essential. The home has three levels โ€” a basement, ground level, and main level accessed by a flight of stairs โ€” so the role is an active one. A friendly family dog is part of the household.

Benefits: Guaranteed hours per week, 5 paid time off days, paid holidays, mileage reimbursement at the current IRS standard rate for work-related driving

Responsibilities:

  • Sole-charge infant care during scheduled hours, including feeding, diapering, naps, and soothing
  • Bottle feeding pumped breast milk and supporting the family's feeding routine
  • Bathing and all personal care for the baby
  • Establishing and maintaining consistent nap and sleep routines
  • Age-appropriate play, tummy time, walks, and developmental engagement
  • Infant laundry
  • Bottle washing, sterilizing, and maintaining baby-related supplies
  • Keeping the nursery and baby-related spaces tidy and organized
  • Communicating daily updates to the parents
  • Flexibility to pivot as needed on busy days to support the household

Requirements:

  • Significant professional experience caring for newborns and infants
  • Valid driver's license, reliable personal vehicle, and comfort driving in rural and snowy conditions
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • COVID-19 vaccination required
  • Comfortable in a home with a friendly dog
  • Physically active and comfortable with stairs throughout the day
  • Warm, patient, affectionate, and genuinely nurturing caregiving style
  • Reliable, self-directed, and comfortable working independently
  • Must be able to provide 3โ€“5 professional references
