The Medication Technician (Med Tech) is responsible for storing, administering, and dispensing medications to residents at a Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE), in strict accordance with state regulations and facility policies. The Med Tech maintains accurate medication records, observes and reports any changes in residents' conditions, and helps ensure a safe and healthy environment for all residents. Med Techs must meet the qualifications established by the Community Care Licensing Division and Title 22 regulations.

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Accurately pour, prepare, and administer prescribed medications to residents in accordance with care plans and physician orders.
  2. Maintain accurate documentation of medication administration, including medication logs and incident reports when necessary.
  3. Monitor residents for side effects or adverse reactions, and promptly report concerns to the supervising nurse or administrator.
  4. Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), when needed, to ensure resident comfort and safety.
  5. Track medication inventory levels, ensure timely reordering, and report any discrepancies.
  6. Safeguard medications in accordance with facility policies and California RCFE regulations.
  7. Ensure compliance with state licensing requirements, including accurate recordkeeping and timely reporting.
  8. Communicate effectively with physicians, pharmacies, and family members as authorized and appropriate to clarify medication orders or concerns.
  9. Ensure resident confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations in all medication-related documentation and communication.
  10. Ensure expired, discontinued, or unused medications are disposed of properly, following facility policy and state guidelines.
  11. Participate in audits, inspections, and quality assurance reviews to maintain compliance with healthcare standards.
  12. Maintain a clean, organized, and secure medication storage area.
  13. Collaborate with the healthcare team to provide high-quality, coordinated care for residents.
  14. Educate residents and their families about prescribed medications, potential side effects, and the importance of following treatment plans.
  15. Report any issues related to medication administration, resident health, or facility conditions promptly to the appropriate supervisor.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  2. Completion of Medication Technician training (preferred, but not required).
  3. Current CPR/BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  4. Demonstrated proficiency in pouring and administering medications in accordance with prescribed care plans and physician orders.
  5. Familiarity with California RCFE regulations and best practices in medication administration.
  6. Basic understanding of common medications used in elder care, including potential side effects and interactions.
  7. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  8. Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions related to medication administration.
  9. Compassionate and empathetic demeanor, with a strong commitment to resident-centered care.
