Job description

Assistant Professor in Islamic Studies

The Department of Religious Studies at Stanford University seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Islamic Studies. We seek candidates specializing in pre-modern Islam; regional focus and disciplinary approach are open. A PhD is required at the time of appointment. The successful candidate is encouraged to support and contribute to the department's commitment to diversity, inclusive pedagogy, and equitable practice. They must demonstrate substantial evidence of creativity and excellence in research and scholarship, engagement with the broader concerns, theories, and methodologies of Religious Studies, and dedication to teaching and advising students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The term of the appointment is expected to begin September 1, 2027.

Candidates should apply through Stanford Faculty Positions and upload:

  • curriculum vitae (including a complete publication list)

  • research (2 pages max) and teaching (1 page max) statements

  • a brief (no more than 300 words) summary of their expected research program

  • contact information for three letters of recommendation

The salary range for this position is $115,133 - $135,388. 

Stanford University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position upon hire. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity.
