Overview

Our team of doctors, advanced care providers, nurses, therapists, and researchers provides the region's most advanced medicine at multiple facilities, campuses, clinics, and classrooms. We offer patients convenient access to innovative treatments and advancements that improve the health and overall well-being of our community.

Responsibilities
  • Operates the dedicated transport vehicles safely and efficiently in accordance with Emergency Vehicle Operator standards, hospital policy, and state/federal regulations.
  • Maintains a clean driving record and participates in annual driving evaluations and safety reviews.
  • Serves as a supporting clinical team member during interfacility transport, assisting with equipment setup, documentation, andbasic patient care.
  • Assists in patient care when not assigned to a transport, supporting clinical staff members.
  • Participates in patient care tasks under Alabama Scope of Practice and outlined in hospital policy such as: Taking vital signs and reporting abnormalities to clinical staff, Performing venipuncture, IV insertion and lntraosseous insertion as verified by clinical competencies.
  • Conducting EKGs and point-of-care testing (e.g., ID NOW, rapid strep, urinalysis).
  • Collecting routine lab specimens.
  • Assisting with triage and registration.
  • Administration of supplemental oxygen via nasal cannula, mask, or bag-valve mask.
  • Use of automated glucometer along with capillary puncture for the purpose of blood glucose monitoring.
  • Use of suction.
  • Use and placement of cardiopulmonary monitoring.
  • Nasogastric or Orogastric tube placement
  • Medication administration
  • Transports patients within the hospital (e.g., to Radiology or inpatient units) as needed.
  • Maintains readiness of transport vehicles, including restocking supplies with the help of transport staff and equipment checks.
  • Assists with behavioral health patient observation when necessary.
  • Promotes family-centered, developmentally appropriate care and advocates for patient safety at all times.
  • Participates in hospital-provided education, and transport-specific training
  • Driver and Insurance Compliance
  • Because transport safety is a critical component of this role, paramedics must:Maintain a valid driver's license and clean driving record at all times.Successfully complete an annual driver audit and evaluation to confirm safe operating skills.Maintain compliance with University of South Alabama's insurance eligibility requirements.Immediately report any changes in driving status, citations, or accidents to leadership.
  • Failure to maintain annual driving compliance or insurance eligibility will disqualify the employee from transport responsibilities.
  • Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements
  • Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards
  • Regular and prompt attendance
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required
  • Related duties as assigned
Additional Information

Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent and completion of an EMT-Paramedic course Required
  • 1 year of paramedic experience Preferred
  • Licensed as a paramedic in the state of Alabama Required
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Required or
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support Required
  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State - Possession of a valid driver's license and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage under the University of South Alabama may be required for some positions. Required
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support Required
  • Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.
