Job description

Join SMS Equipment in Anchorage, Alaska, and work hands-on with some of the largest, most advanced earthmoving equipment in the industry. As a Heavy Equipment Technician, you’ll work both in the field and in the shop solving tough challenges and keeping critical machines moving.

Base Wage: $36.84 - $52.62 per hour, dependent upon experience. Additional premiums may apply.
Location: Anchorage, AK.
Schedule: 5x2 (Monday to Friday).

What You’ll Do

  • Work in both field and shop environments performing assemblies, preventative maintenance, repairs and complete overhauls on heavy equipment.
  • Diagnose faults or malfunctions using computerized or other testing equipment to determine the extent of repair required.
  • Make recommendations regarding extent of repairs and suggest methods of improvement.
  • Interpret work order and technical manuals.
  • Complete job specific reports and paperwork as needed.
  • Have a strong awareness and attitude towards workplace health and safety.
  • Work remotely in adverse weather conditions. Job tasks may be physically demanding lifting up to 50 lbs. Confined Space work is required.

What You Bring

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in the mechanical trades, with a minimum of 3 years of field service experience. Equivalent combinations of education and shop-based experience may be considered. Other requirements include:

  • Strong commitment to safety.
  • Experience in repair/maintenance of heavy equipment (construction and mining equipment experience preferred; we also invite applicants with backgrounds in highway trucks, agriculture equipment or military equipment).
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • The ability to travel and meet customer site requirements as needed.
  • Experience with Komatsu equipment is considered an asset.

This position is classified as an Individual Contributor role in SMS Equipment’s competency framework, requiring demonstration of core competencies (customer focus, collaboration, and technical/functional expertise).
