Live In Film Colorist information

What is a live in film colorist?

Live In Film Colorists are professionals who work on-set or during live film productions to adjust and enhance the color of footage in real-time. Their job is to ensure that the visual tone, mood, and consistency of the film are maintained throughout the shoot. Using specialized software and hardware, they collaborate closely with cinematographers and directors to achieve the desired look before post-production, saving time and ensuring creative intent is preserved. Their expertise is crucial for productions that require immediate color correction or grading, such as live broadcasts or projects with tight deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a live in film colorist?

To excel as a Live In Film Colorist, you need a deep understanding of color theory, film post-production workflows, and typically a background in film, photography, or related fields. Proficiency with industry-standard color grading software such as DaVinci Resolve, Baselight, or Adobe Premiere Pro, as well as familiarity with various camera formats and LUTs, is crucial. Strong attention to detail, creative vision, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with directors and cinematographers. These abilities ensure that the visual tone of a film aligns with the creative vision, delivering a polished and compelling final product.

What are some common challenges faced by a live in film colorist, and how can they be managed?

A common challenge for Live In Film Colorists is maintaining color consistency across different scenes while working under tight deadlines, especially during live or real-time grading sessions. Another challenge includes adapting to last-minute creative direction from directors or cinematographers, which requires both technical agility and strong communication skills. To manage these challenges, it's helpful to establish a clear workflow, maintain organized project files, and engage in regular collaboration with the creative team to ensure expectations are aligned throughout the project.

Job description

Open Vacancy: This role is a current, active position and we are accepting applications.

Our client is one of North America's leading producers of non-scripted content. They have produced and directed over 70 documentaries and filmed productions-including award-winning features, live television, stage-to-screen productions, and new scripted and unscripted developments-with work recognized across premier international film festivals including TIFF.

About the Role

We are seeking a smart, energetic, and resourceful Production Assistant / Film & TV Intern to join a fast-moving production team. This is an initial 4-month paid contract with potential to transition into a permanent full-time role.

In this position, you will work directly alongside experienced filmmakers and producers, gaining hands-on exposure to the end-to-end business of creating film and television. Your focus will span research, development, production logistics, administrative coordination, and pitch support, offering direct insight into how projects move from initial concept to screen.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Assist development and production teams across documentary, live TV, stage-to-screen, and new scripted/unscripted projects.

  • Conduct thorough research and assist in moving projects from initial concept through development into production.

  • Coordinate production logistics, workflow organization, and daily operational support.

  • Support senior filmmakers and producers with project organization and changing production needs.

  • Handle both high-level creative tasks and essential day-to-day unglamorous production work.

What We're Looking For
  • Relevant Experience: 1-3 years of experience in film, media, or television production (or equivalent hands-on project experience). High initiative, quick learning agility, and strong organizational skills are equally valued.
  • Industry Passion: A genuine drive for film, television, non-scripted storytelling, and entertainment.

  • Resourcefulness: A proactive problem-solver who takes initiative rather than waiting for step-by-step direction.

  • Exceptional Organization: Sharp attention to detail with the ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment.

  • Discretion & Maturity: Professional attitude when dealing with high-profile talent, partners, and confidential development materials.

  • Strong Communication & Tech Skills: Clear written and verbal communication; comfortable learning new digital workflow tools.

  • Adaptable Work Ethic: Willingness to handle both high-level creative support and the essential, unglamorous day-to-day tasks that keep production moving.

  • Availability & Location: Ability to work in-person in Toronto, ON during standard hours (10:00 AM - 5:00 PM), with flexibility for occasional early mornings or late days during active production cycles.

Position Details & Compensation
This is an in-person, 4-month paid contract paying $20.00 - $25.00/hour based on experience, with strong potential to transition into a full-time role for the right candidate.
To Apply
Please submit your resume along with a brief cover note outlining why you want to build your career in film/television and what makes you a great fit for a fast-paced, entrepreneurial production environment.
