Job Description
Job Title: Custodian Status: Full time
Exemption Status: Non-Exempt Salary Grade: 20
Department/Location: SS Peter amp; Paul Catholic School / Tucson, AZ
Primary Function: Under the direction of the Pastor, School Principal, Maintenance Supervisor, or other assigned manager is responsible for performing janitorial services and light maintenance in a the parish school and other parish facilities. The Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, “…Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” (Eph. 4:1)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Recognize and support the unique Catholic Mission of the Diocese by speaking, acting, and instructing consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The employee may not espouse, in word or deed, any doctrine inconsistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Give evidence of living Gospel values by being an active member of a faith community and being open to the importance of a personal faith journey; strive to model the teaching of Jesus by attitude and example.
  • Develop a cleaning schedule to assure the Church or school is clean and maintained in an orderly fashion.
  • Perform general custodial duties to include cleaning and light maintenance of the parish or school facilities.
  • Assist grounds person on an “as needed” basis.
  • Perform scheduled monthly, semi-annual, or annual janitorial duties, i.e., floor waxing, painting, window washing, carpet cleaning, etc. as directed and in accordance with the parish and school maintenance schedules.
  • Provide set-up and cleaning of facilities for all activities as directed.
  • Maintain a supply of cleaning supplies and equipment; properly account for materials and equipment.
  • Maintain security of buildings, equipment, and tools.
  • Comply with safety regulations as required; maintain a safe working environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical/Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity; normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required in a normal maintenance environment
Required Activities: Walking: sitting; standing; stooping; reaching; talking; handling; hearing; carrying; and climbing ladders.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Must have a working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of the Diocese and Catholic Church; must be in full communion with the Catholic Church
  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written; excellent human relations and interpersonal skills.
  • Exercise courtesy to fellow employees, school parents, volunteers, parishioners and the public
  • Must be a self-starter; well organized; perform multiple tasks simultaneously and work with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; punctuality is a must; ability to travel locally as required; weekend and overtime work may be required
  • Working familiarity with computer technology.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background, criminal history, and credit history check.
  • Possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.
  • Be able to read directions and label safety warnings. Must be safety conscious.
  • Knowledge, skills and experience in handling janitorial equipment and maintenance tools.
  • Professional bearing; clean and neat personal appearance.
Education and Experience:
  • High school graduate or equivalent education
  • 1 years’ experience in a commercial or private maintenance, janitorial or similar position
Other/Preferred Skills
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
