Job description

Associate Director, Competitive Intelligence & Market Research, Commercial Operations & Analytics

Agios is searching for a dynamic Associate Director, Competitive Intelligence & Market Research to join our Commercial Operations & Analytics team. This role leads the market research and competitive intelligence functions across our marketed and pipeline portfolio, spanning rare and genetically defined diseases. It builds the customer, market, and competitive understanding that informs brand and portfolio strategy – designing and executing primary and secondary research, and systematically tracking the competitive landscape across in‑line and pipeline dynamics.

This is a highly visible, cross‑functional role that turns external signals into clear, actionable insight for the organization. The Associate Director, Competitive Intelligence & Market Research partners broadly across the organization – marketing, medical affairs, market access, advanced analytics, etc. – to ensure strategy and execution are grounded in a deep understanding of customers and a sharp read of the competitive environment.

What You Will Do
  • Lead primary market research, qualitative and quantitative to build the foundational customer understanding for pre‑launch and in‑line brands
  • Integrate primary research with secondary data analytics into clear, actionable insights that inform brand and commercial strategy and proactively anticipate the organization’s next questions
  • Provide an objective assessment of the external environment and recommend strategies and tactics to strengthen positioning and respond to competitor dynamics
  • Lead competitive intelligence for the portfolio – systematically monitor competitor activity across in‑line and pipeline dynamics (clinical, regulatory, commercial, and scientific congress developments) and translate the implications into clear, actionable recommendations
  • Apply practical AI and scalable approaches to accelerate competitive monitoring, alerting, and synthesis, and deliver timely competitive read‑outs to cross‑functional teams and leadership
  • Partner with brand and commercial teams on strategy development and tactical execution across the product lifecycle, contributing customer and competitive insight to launch planning and readiness
  • Participate in key cross‑functional teams – early commercial, brand, and portfolio – to ensure strategic decisions reflect market intelligence and customer insight
  • Act as an internal consultant across marketing, sales, market access, medical, clinical, regulatory, finance, and advanced analytics
  • Direct third‑party research vendors effectively, on time and within budget
What You Bring
  • 8+ years of experience in market research and competitive intelligence in the biopharmaceutical industry, with hands‑on depth in primary market research and secondary data analytics; bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (e.g., MBA) preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise designing and executing primary market research (qualitative and quantitative) and integrating it with secondary data into actionable insight that shapes commercial strategy
  • Experience leading competitive intelligence across a portfolio, with the ability to synthesize and communicate implications succinctly to varied audiences; familiarity with practical AI applications to competitive intelligence preferred
  • Launch experience strongly preferred – pre‑launch, launch, and post‑launch – with an understanding of cross‑functional dependencies and processes
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including the ability to draw insight from complex claims and secondary datasets
  • Inquisitive, strategic mindset; able to challenge assumptions, go beyond the obvious answer, and turn ambiguous business questions into actionable plans
  • Strong cross‑functional collaboration and influencing skills; comfortable partnering across marketing, medical affairs, market access, clinical, and advanced analytics
  • Excellent communication skills; able to distill complex analyses into clear narratives and recommendations, with confidence in front of executive‑level audiences
  • Experience in rare or genetically defined diseases preferred; experience managing third‑party research vendors on time and within budget
Work Location

Location Agnostic: Work location for this role is based on employee’s individual preference. This role has the ability to be either remote in the US or hybrid in our Cambridge Headquarters. Hybrid schedules vary but are generally less than 3 days per week onsite and hybrid employees are expected to live within commutable distance to our Cambridge Headquarters. Remote employees work entirely from home except for attending company‑sponsored events/meetings. For employees who choose to work remotely, travel may be required for certain company events commensurate with the above job description.

What we will give you:
  • Deliberate Development. Your professional growth as one of our top priorities.
  • Flexibility. We’re all about individual needs. We embrace different perspectives, work styles, health and wellness approaches, care of families and productivity. When you’re at your best, we’re at our best.
  • Premium benefits package. We invest in the health, well‑being, and security of our people with a premium benefits package that is well‑rounded and flexible to help meet the varied personal and professional needs of every member of our team.
  • Competitive and equitable performance‑based compensation. This includes base salary and both short‑ and long‑term incentives that are connected to our business strategy and vary based on individual and company performance.
    • The current base salary range for this position is expected to be between $153,541 and $230,312 annualized; final salary will be determined based on various factors including, but not limited to, years of relevant experience, job knowledge, skills and proficiency, degree/education, and internal comparators.
  • Psychological safety. We support an environment of fearlessness. We want you to share your ideas, speak candidly and take data‑informed risks to help push the boundaries.
  • Commitment to diversity. We strive to foster a welcoming workplace where everyone can thrive. We’re continuously looking to improve the inclusivity of our workforce.
  • Commitment to community. We’re an active participant in the communities that surround us – the communities where we live, and the community of people and their loved ones in need of better treatment options for conditions that are often overlooked.
