What is a live in caption editor?

A Live In Caption Editor is a professional responsible for creating and editing real-time captions for live television broadcasts, events, or online streams. They ensure that spoken words, sound effects, and other important audio elements are accurately and quickly transcribed into readable text for viewers. This role often requires fast typing skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with captioning software. Live In Caption Editors play a crucial part in making content accessible to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a live in caption editor?

To thrive as a Live In Caption Editor, you need a strong command of grammar, fast and accurate typing skills, and a keen ear for audio content, usually supported by a background in language or communications. Familiarity with real-time captioning software, speech recognition tools, and occasionally stenography equipment is essential. Exceptional attention to detail, multitasking abilities, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and clarity under time pressure. These competencies are crucial for providing accessible, error-free captions that support diverse audiences and comply with legal standards.

What are common challenges faced by live in caption editors, and how can they be managed?

Live In Caption Editors often work under tight deadlines, requiring them to produce accurate captions in real-time as events unfold. This can be challenging due to the rapid pace, varying accents, or technical jargon. Effective time management, strong listening skills, and mastery of captioning software are essential for success. Collaborating closely with broadcasters, technical teams, and sometimes event organizers helps ensure the captions are both timely and accurate. Regular practice and staying updated with industry tools can help mitigate these challenges.

What is the difference between Live In Caption Editor vs Closed Captioner?

A Closed Captioner typically provides captions for recorded content, mainly working remotely. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

  • Conduct customer interviews and guide homeowners, employees, and other talent to create authentic, engaging stories.
  • Operate cameras, lighting, audio, and other production equipment professionally.

  • Perform photo retouching, color correction, audio editing, and other post-production work as needed.
  • Manage and organize raw footage, photography, project files, and final assets to ensure content is accessible and efficiently maintained.
  • Maintain consistency with Improveit brand standards and creative direction.
Content & Marketing Support
  • Partner with the Marketing team to develop visual content that supports broader marketing campaigns and business objectives.
  • Help identify opportunities to repurpose existing photo and video assets across multiple channels.
  • Collaborate with social media and content team members to develop engaging content.
  • Support the Recruiting team with visual campaigns and content designed to attract top talent.
  • Participate in on-location events and provide live social media content when needed.
  • Assist with event setup, packing/unpacking, display organization, and other marketing logistics as needed.
Project Ownership
  • Manage multiple production projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and priorities.
  • Take ownership of projects from concept and planning through production, editing, and final delivery.
  • Communicate proactively with homeowners, internal stakeholders, and members of the Marketing team.
  • Be receptive to feedback and continuously look for ways to improve the quality and effectiveness of our creative work.
  • Bring new ideas, trends, and creative approaches that help Improveit stand out.
Qualifications & Experience
  • 2+ years of professional experience in photography, videography, media production, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating photography and video production skills.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and Lightroom.
  • Strong understanding of camera operations, composition, lighting, audio, and videography techniques.
  • Experience with video editing, photo retouching, and post-production.
  • Experience developing storyboards, shot lists, scripts, or other pre-production materials.
  • Comfortable conducting interviews and directing talent in front of the camera.
  • Strong eye for composition, lighting, visual storytelling, and brand presentation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly when working with homeowners and customers.
  • Highly organized with strong project ownership and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently while collaborating effectively with a broader team.
  • Comfortable managing multiple priorities and adapting quickly in a field-production environment.
  • Collaborative, feedback-friendly mindset with a passion for pushing creative work beyond the expected.
