Job description

Description
The Department of Health, Human Performance, and Recreation (HHPR) in the Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences at Baylor University invites applications for a full-time, in-person, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank, beginning August 2027. Review of applications will commence immediately and continue until the position is filled. We seek a dynamic researcher-educator whose work centers on human performance, with expertise or interest that spans one or more of the following areas: environmental physiology (cold, heat, space, altitude, or hypoxic stress), emergency medicine, sleep science and fatigue mitigation, military and tactical human performance, microgravity, biomedical wearable devices or sensor development for applied physiological measurements. The successful candidate will build and sustain an independent line of research within their own laboratory as well as work collaboratively with established researchers at Baylor University to expand and enhance the capabilities of the ARKTOS Research Center. The ARKTOS Research Center is a multidisciplinary research and development facility housed at the Baylor Research Innovation Collaborative (BRIC), built around an advanced environmental chamber that can simulate extreme cold and altitude. The facility has cutting-edge medical simulation, tactical performance, sleep study, and physiological monitoring capabilities.
About the Department & Facilities:
Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences at Baylor University houses health-related academic departments including Communication Sciences and Disorders; Health, Human Performance, and Recreation; Human Sciences and Design; Occupational Therapy; Physical Therapy; Physician Assistant Studies; and Public Health - under a shared mission of advancing health and quality of life through science, scholarship, and innovation, grounded in Baylor's Christian research university identity. The college also houses the nationally recognized Army-Baylor joint graduate programs.
The Department of Health, Human Performance, and Recreation (HHPR) focuses on the science of health, physical activity, and human performance, and maintains two shared research facilities in addition to individual researchers' laboratories. The Baylor Laboratories for Exercise Science and Technology (BLEST), a 4,400+ square-foot facility featuring cardiopulmonary assessment, DXA-based body composition, and vascular imaging capabilities; the Mooney Lab for Exercise, Nutrition & Biochemistry (MLENB), equipped for biochemical and molecular analyses including real-time PCR, HPLC, and protein array assays. Faculty research is actively supported through federal and private external funding, with primary emphasis on the independent and combined effects of exercise and nutrition on health and human performance. Qualifications
Required:
  • Earned doctorate (Ph.D., M.D., D.O., or equivalent) in a relevant human performance, health/ exercise sciences, military, or clinical field.
  • Evidence of applied and/or translational research expertise in one or more targeted areas.
  • Demonstrated potential for or record of securing external research funding.
  • Strong commitment to undergraduate research engagement.

Preferred:
  • Experience with wearable physiological sensors/ technology, biomarker analysis thereof, or field-deployable biomedical devices.
  • Familiarity with military or tactical populations and operational research contexts.
  • Skillsets to augment or expand existing human performance research capabilities.
  • Competency in data science, machine learning, automization, or predictive modeling applied to physiological datasets.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and sustain a high-impact, externally funded research program.
  • Teach courses in the Exercise Physiology major within the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation.
  • Collaborate with faculty across Baylor and external partners to enhance research and student opportunities.
  • Support our Christian mission by modeling and sharing one's faith life to and with students through teaching, research, and service.
  • Contribute to departmental, college, and university service.
