What is a live event camera operator?

A Live Event Camera Operator is responsible for capturing high-quality video footage of live events, such as concerts, sports, conferences, and performances. They operate cameras, adjust framing and focus, and follow cues from a director to ensure dynamic and engaging coverage. This role requires technical proficiency with camera equipment, an understanding of live production workflows, and the ability to adapt to fast-paced environments. Depending on the event, operators may work with handheld, tripod-mounted, or remote-controlled cameras. Strong communication skills and teamwork are essential for coordinating with producers and other crew members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a live event camera operator?

To thrive as a Live Event Camera Operator, you need strong technical proficiency with video cameras, understanding of shot composition, and experience capturing dynamic live footage, often supported by a background in film, broadcasting, or media production. Familiarity with equipment like broadcast cameras, wireless transmission systems, and live production switchers is common, and certifications in camera operation or safety may be advantageous. Excellent communication, adaptability, and teamwork set standout candidates apart in high-pressure, fast-paced event settings. Job description

Overview

Porchlight Productions is a boutique video production studio based in Canton, Georgia. We create cinematic, story-driven work for businesses throughout Metro Atlanta and the Southeast.

Our projects include brand films, commercials, founder stories, event recaps, product videos, social cutdowns, and ongoing content partnerships. The formats change, but the goal stays the same: find the real story and tell it well.

We are hiring a Senior Video Editor to take meaningful ownership of post-production. This is an editorial role first. You will shape projects from raw footage through final delivery, collaborate directly with our Founder and Director, and help on set when the production calendar calls for another experienced pair of hands.

We need someone who can do more than operate software. You should understand story, performance, pacing, music, sound, and the small decisions that make an edit feel finished.

Responsibilities
  • Edit short-form and long-form projects, including brand films, commercials, interviews, event recaps, social content, and internal videos
  • Find clear, compelling stories within interviews, b-roll, scripts, and archival material
  • Own post-production from media organization and project setup through revisions, finishing, versioning, and final delivery
  • Collaborate with the Founder, producer, and other creatives on treatments, story structure, and editorial direction
  • Apply client feedback thoughtfully while protecting the strength and clarity of the final piece
  • Maintain a high standard for pacing, color, audio, music, titles, and overall polish
  • Work comfortably in both DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro, with DaVinci Resolve as the preferred primary platform
  • Maintain organized project files, proxies, media, exports, and handoffs
  • Support productions as a camera operator or experienced production team member when needed
  • Assist with camera, lighting, audio, media management, and other on-set responsibilities
  • Occasionally lead the capture of a straightforward interview, internal video, or small-footprint production
  • Help improve Porchlightโ€™s post-production systems as the company and workload grow
Requirements
  • 5+ years of professional video editing experience, preferably in an agency, production company, or branded-content environment
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating story-driven editing, pacing, music, sound, and visual judgment
  • Advanced ability in DaVinci Resolve or Adobe Premiere Pro, with the ability and willingness to work in both
  • Experience editing interview-driven stories, multicamera footage, commercial content, and social deliverables
  • Strong understanding of color correction, audio cleanup, export settings, codecs, and professional delivery workflows
  • Working knowledge of professional camera, lighting, and audio production
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines without losing track of feedback, assets, or deliverables
  • Ability to receive direction, explain creative choices, and contribute your own point of view
  • Comfortable working independently within a small, collaborative team
  • Reliable transportation and availability for local and occasional regional productions
  • No specific degree required. Portfolio, experience, and judgment matter more.
