Lithium Refining information

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in lithium refining, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in lithium refining often encounter challenges such as maintaining strict safety protocols due to the hazardous chemicals involved, ensuring consistent product purity, and adapting to evolving environmental regulations. To address these, it's important to stay current with industry best practices, participate in regular safety training, and collaborate closely with quality assurance and environmental teams. Additionally, leveraging advancements in refining technology and process automation can help mitigate risks and improve efficiency.

What is lithium refining?

Lithium refining is the process of purifying raw lithium ore or brine to produce high-quality lithium compounds, such as lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide. These refined products are crucial for various industries, with a significant portion used in manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles and electronics. The refining process involves several steps, including extraction, concentration, purification, and chemical conversion, to ensure the lithium meets strict industry standards. As demand for lithium-ion batteries grows, efficient and sustainable lithium refining has become increasingly important.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in lithium refining, and why are they important?

To excel in lithium refining, you need a background in chemical engineering, metallurgy, or a related field, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Familiarity with process control systems, analytical laboratory equipment, and safety protocols such as OSHA standards is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork help individuals address complex challenges in refining environments. These skills and qualifications are critical for maintaining efficiency, safety, and product quality in the lithium supply chain.

What is the difference between Lithium Refining vs Lithium Processing Technician?

AspectLithium RefiningLithium Processing Technician
CredentialsHigh school diploma, technical training, certifications in chemical handlingHigh school diploma, technical training, certifications in chemical safety
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, chemical processing facilitiesManufacturing plants, chemical processing units
Industry UsageMining, chemical manufacturing, battery industryBattery manufacturing, chemical processing, manufacturing

While both roles involve working with chemicals in industrial settings, Lithium Refining focuses on the extraction and purification of lithium from raw materials, whereas Lithium Processing Technicians handle the operational aspects of processing lithium into usable forms. Both require technical skills and safety certifications, but their specific tasks and environments differ slightly.

Job description

Salary: $100,000 - $120,000 + Equity

EnergyX is a leader in the global transition to sustainable energy, pioneering its proprietary GET-Lit Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology platform that delivers battery-grade lithium faster, cleaner, and with a smaller footprint than conventional evaporation methods. Our America flagship lithium project, Lonestar located in the Smackover Region of Texarkana, TX commissioned the largest DLE plant in the U.S. in Q1 2026. EnergyX is on a mission of taking lithium From Brine to Battery and building Americas domestic critical minerals supply chain.

Position Summary:

The Plant Superintendent is located in Texarkana, TX, onsite at the Lonestar Demonstration Plant. The position will own daily production and production standards at the DLE lithium extraction and production facility, serving as the single point of accountability to executive leadership for safe, efficient, and consistent plant output as the site scales from Demonstration to Commercial operations. This role sits at the intersection of hands-on shift leadership and disciplined operational management: the Superintendent will run the floor, while also owning the data, reporting, and continuous-improvement systems that prove out the plants performance for internal leadership, project financing, and future FEL estimates. This is a production-focused role; it does not carry engineering/FEL estimating or capital project execution responsibilities, which remain with the Project/Engineering team.

Key Responsibilities:

Production & Operations Leadership

  • Own safety, plant uptime, throughput, quality, and lithium recovery/production standards against established targets for the Texarkana Demonstration / Commercial facility.
  • Assign daily tasks, workstations, and shift coverage to operators to ensure continuous, efficient plant operation.
  • Manage scheduling, attendance, and timecard submission/approval for all contract and direct-hire operators.
  • Serve as the on-site escalation point for process upsets, equipment malfunctions, and operational troubleshooting.

Data, Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Own data collection, quality checks, and daily/weekly production reporting for the plant, feeding into company-wide and executive dashboards.
  • Establish and maintain a data-driven performance tracking process that monitors efficiency and efficacy against production standards.
  • Identify process deviations and drive root-cause troubleshooting and corrective action with operators and technical staff.
  • Partner with Engineering to translate demonstrated production data into insights that support future FEL-3/DFS estimating and commercial scale-up planning (Lonestar and other ktpa-scale projects).

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized facility in full compliance with EnergyX EHS standards and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Enforce QA/QC standards for production output and process consistency.

Materials & Resource Management

  • Oversee approval and ordering of equipment, spare parts, and consumables required for uninterrupted plant operation.
  • Manage vendor/subcontractor coordination for equipment service, calibration, and delivery timelines.

Qualifications:

Required

  • 5+ years of production/operations supervisory experience in a chemical processing, mineral extraction, refining, or related industrial plant environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing production schedules, shift staffing, and contract labor.
  • Working knowledge of process data collection, reporting, and KPI/dashboard tracking.
  • Strong understanding of plant safety programs (OSHA, EHS) and hands-on experience maintaining compliance in an industrial setting.
  • Ability to work on-site in Texarkana, TX, including flexibility for extended hours during commissioning, start-up, or process troubleshooting.

Preferred

  • Experience in lithium, brine chemistry, direct lithium extraction (DLE), mining, or battery materials production.
  • Experience supporting or transitioning a plant through Pilot Demonstration Commercial scale-up.
  • Familiarity with FEL/FS/FEED project stage-gating (not required to produce estimates, but able to supply accurate operating data to those who do).
  • Associates or Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field, or equivalent hands-on plant experience.

What Success Looks Like

  • Consistent, documented achievement of plant production and recovery targets.
  • Zero lost-time safety incidents; strong EHS audit results.
  • Reliable, accurate production data flowing into company dashboards with minimal rework.
  • A trained, cross-functional operator team capable of covering all workstations with minimal downtime.
  • Smooth, on-schedule support of the plants progression toward commercial-scale operation.
