Title: Tutor
Employment Status: Seasonal, contractual position (approx. 15-20 hours per week)
Dates: June 15 until August 24, 2026
Location: In person at one of the Brilliant Detroit hubs (See our website for locations)
Pay Rate: $20 to $22 per hour. The actual rate is based on experience.
Position Description:
Brilliant Detroit offers a unique and exciting opportunity to collaborate with local education partners. You will host a six-week literacy tutoring program for families with children in grades K-3. As a Tutor, you will play a crucial and impactful role in our literacy tutoring program. Your dedication and expertise will help develop students' literacy skills, significantly impacting their learning journey. You will also host three family workshops to engage with families, empowering them to support their child's learning journey. Your role is not just important, but significant and integral to the success of our program. We value your contribution and recognize the importance of your role in shaping the future of these students.
Responsibilities:
  • Deliver targeted instruction in person to a class of approximately 12-15 scholars.
  • Support small group learning in daily 90-minute sessions, 2-4 days weekly, between 9:30 am - 12 pm, Monday - Thursday.
  • Follow a prescribed literacy-based lesson plan.
  • Reading Literacy for 1st and 2nd Graders
  • Reading Literacy and Math for 3rd and 4th Graders
  • Administer assessments on all students before the start of the program and at the conclusion to measure learning progress and program efficacy, and to tailor instruction to individual student needs, thereby ensuring the effectiveness of our program.
  • Track and enter data such as attendance and assessment data weekly.
  • Attend and engage in all Brilliant Detroit training, weekly PLC (professional learning community) meetings, and additional meetings with the Hub and program lead staff as needed.
  • Conduct team huddles to build relationships with parents/caretakers
  • Facilitate monthly family workshops to equip families with reading tips for use at home and foster a supportive learning environment beyond the classroom.
  • Communicate with families consistently with session reminders or other relevant information.
  • Create a positive, achievement-oriented, structured learning environment that motivates and supports students.
  • Participate in feedback and coaching conversations with the Program Leader. The leader will provide guidance and support based on instructional observations and help you develop your teaching skills. You are not alone in this journey. We are committed to providing the necessary support and guidance to help you succeed in your role.

Qualifications:
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Experience teaching or working with families and early elementary children is preferred.
  • Reliable internet access is required for virtual meetings.
  • Experience using Zoom and Google Suite (i.e., Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Sheets) preferred.
  • Can prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Collaborates well with others in an elementary subject setting.
