Certified Medical Assistant

Phoenix - Litchfield Park - Goodyear, AZ 85395-9214

The Certified Medical Assistant will utilize their expertise to make a significant impact in both clinical and administrative roles. In this position, they will perform various tasks, ranging from assisting with patient care and advanced procedures under the direction of a licensed Independent Provider (LIP) to ensuring smooth office operations. As a certified professional, the Medical Assistant's skills will enable them to perform clinical and administrative duties with high competence, contributing to superior patient care and clinic efficiency.

Clinical Duties:

  • Patient Preparation and Assistance
    • Assist in preparing patients for examinations and procedures by taking vital signs, recording medical histories, and providing reassurance.
    • Support healthcare providers during patient exams by preparing exam rooms, organizing instruments, and ensuring all necessary supplies are available.
  • Independent Clinical Tasks
    • Perform blood draws (venipunctures or capillary punctures), administer injections and vaccines, and assist with minor procedures as ordered by the LIP.
    • Administer oral, topical, sublingual, or injectable medications per LIP's orders and within the medical assistant scope of practice.
    • Clean, dress, and bandage superficial wounds and assist in routine clinical tasks like CLIA-waived tests.
    • Conduct regular quality control tests to ensure the accuracy of lab results and proper lab equipment functioning.
  • Sterilization and Infection Control
    • Follow proper procedures for labeling, handling, and transporting specimens to ensure accuracy and avoid contamination.
    • Maintain aseptic techniques during clinical procedures to prevent infections.
    • Sterilize medical instruments using autoclaves or other sterilization methods and disinfect exam rooms and equipment after each patient encounter.
    • Use appropriate PPE (gloves, masks, gowns) to minimize the risk of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
    • Ensure that biohazardous waste is disposed of according to protocol.
  • Emergency Response and Patient Care
    • Provide basic first aid and assist with medical emergencies as per Basic Life Support (BLS) standards.
    • Demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity when delivering patient care.
  • Age-Specific Care
    • Provide age-appropriate care and understanding for patients from newborns to elderly individuals.
    • Utilize age-specific techniques (e.g., distraction, comfort positions) to reduce discomfort and anxiety during procedures, particularly with pediatric patients.
  • Pediatric-Specific Duties
    • Measure and record vital signs, growth parameters, and assist pediatricians during exams and routine procedures.
    • Administer vaccines per pediatric immunization schedules and assist with specimen collection for lab testing.
    • Ensure readiness of emergency equipment in pediatric settings and respond to medical emergencies involving children.

Administrative Duties:

  • Medical Record Management
    • Ensure accurate and up-to-date patient records by entering data, filing documents, and managing electronic health records (EHR) systems.
    • Safeguard patient confidentiality and maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Office Support
    • Manage general office tasks, including answering phones, organizing medical supplies, and maintaining inventory.
    • Assist with billing, coding, and insurance claims processing as guided by experienced staff.
    • Perform pre-visit planning to gather relevant patient information for upcoming appointments.
  • Follow-up and Documentation
    • Provide timely responses to telephone encounters and patient inquiries.
    • Complete documentation for urgent care follow-ups, communicable disease reporting, and hospital transfers.
    • Facilitate patient coordination for pre-op clearance, medication authorizations, and referrals.
  • Patient Scheduling and Coordination
    • Schedule patient appointments, confirm and verify patient details, and assist with urgent care patient follow-up calls.
    • Prepare informed consent documents and coordinate the transmission of lab specimens (e.g., Cologuard, blood tests).

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Required Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited medical assisting program.

Required Experience:

  • One (1+) year of experience in the healthcare field.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Active Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through the American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification Accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA).

  • Flexibility to rotate shifts, weekends, and holidays as required by the clinic's needs. Typically full-time, with potential for evening or weekend shifts depending on the facility's schedule.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or organizational leaders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates with prior Certified Medical Assistant experience (at least 2+ years) are preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) is preferred.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Includes all patient-facing clinical staff (Medical Assistants, Phlebotomists, Mammography Technologists, Radiologic Technologists, Multi-Specialty staff, Providers) as well as Facilities Technicians. These positions typically require prolonged standing and walking, frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling of equipment or supplies (up to 50 pounds), manual dexterity, and compliance with infection control and safety protocols. Facilities Technicians may also perform repairs, renovations, remodeling, preventive maintenance, and use tools and equipment to support our medical centers.

Environmental Conditions:

Inside: The employee is subject to environmental conditions, protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The work environment is typically a Medical office, clinic, or healthcare facility. The worker is subject to noise; there may be sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
