Industry UsageIT, cloud services, data centers, enterprise solutionsIT support, network management, server administration

While both roles require Linux certifications and involve working with Linux systems, Linux System Engineers focus on designing and developing Linux infrastructure, whereas Linux Administrators handle daily maintenance and support tasks. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in scope and complexity.

What are Linux System Engineers?

Linux System Engineers are IT professionals who specialize in designing, implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting Linux-based computer systems and servers. They manage system configurations, install and update software, monitor system performance, and ensure security and reliability. These engineers often automate tasks using scripting languages like Bash or Python and may also configure networks, storage, and cloud environments. Their expertise is critical for organizations that rely on Linux infrastructure for web hosting, application deployment, or enterprise operations.

What are some typical challenges Linux System Engineers face when managing large-scale server infrastructures?

Linux System Engineers often encounter challenges related to maintaining system uptime, ensuring security, and managing configuration consistency across a large number of servers. Troubleshooting complex issues can require in-depth knowledge of Linux internals and scripting to automate repetitive tasks. Additionally, collaborating with development and operations teams to ensure smooth deployment of updates and new services is crucial, as is staying updated with rapid changes in open-source technologies.

What Does a Linux System Engineer Do?

As a Linux system engineer, your job duties include designing, implementing, troubleshooting, and monitoring programs created through the Linux system. You handle performance issues, ensure that the company has the proper network infrastructure, and develop new programs and tools for the company. You collaborate with team members to build applications that help others get the most out of the available infrastructure. A Linux system engineer also installs applications and uses software tools and IP network technologies to resolve issues and monitor program performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux System Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Linux System Engineer, you need in-depth knowledge of Linux operating systems, scripting languages (such as Bash or Python), and experience with system administration or a related degree. Familiarity with configuration management tools (like Ansible or Puppet), virtualization platforms, cloud services, and relevant certifications (such as RHCE or CompTIA Linux+) is highly beneficial. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing complex systems and collaborating with technical teams. These abilities ensure reliability, security, and efficient operation of critical IT infrastructure.

Job description

At Space Coast Credit Union (SCCU), our members are at the heart of everything we do. Since 1951, we've been committed to delivering financial services founded on integrity and a people-first philosophy.
This position is a 6 month contract-to-hire.
As a Systems Engineer II, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and securing enterprise Linux platforms with a primary focus on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, while also supporting distributions such as Ubuntu and related Linux variants. This role supports highly available, secure, and well-controlled infrastructure that underpins critical business services in a regulated financial services environment across on-premises, virtual, and cloud-hosted platforms.
Why Join SCCU?
  • Member-Focused Mission: Be part of a not-for-profit organization that reinvests in its members.
  • Flexible Schedule Options
  • Career Growth: We prioritize internal promotions and offer on-the-job training.

Systems Engineer II Key Responsibilities
  • Administer, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise Linux servers with primary responsibility for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and supporting knowledge of Ubuntu and other Linux distributions.
  • Install, configure, patch, upgrade, and harden Linux operating systems, core services, and supporting packages across development, test, and production environments.
  • Manage system performance, availability, capacity, and operational health through monitoring, tuning, log analysis, and proactive maintenance.
  • Implement and maintain security controls including user and group administration, file permissions, SSH, sudo, PAM, SELinux, firewall configuration, certificate updates, and vulnerability remediation.
  • Execute compliance and hardening activities using SCAP, STIG, CIS benchmarks, and NIST-aligned controls; document findings, remediation plans, exceptions, and operational evidence for audits and reviews.
  • Support Linux workloads hosted on virtualized, cloud, and hybrid infrastructure, including integration with VMware, storage, backup, monitoring, networking, and identity platforms.
  • Develop and maintain automation for provisioning, patching, configuration management, health checks, and routine administration using Bash, Python, Ansible, or similar tools.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis for infrastructure incidents impacting operating system, middleware, application, storage, network, or security services.
  • Support backup, recovery, business continuity, and disaster recovery planning and testing for Linux-based systems and services.
  • Participate in platform upgrades, migrations, lifecycle management, and enterprise change activities while following established operational, risk, and change control processes.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, standards, procedures, and change records that support operational consistency and knowledge transfer.
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity, network, database, cloud, and application teams to support secure, resilient, and high-performing production services.

Systems Engineer II Requirements
5 to 8 years of progressively responsible Linux systems administration experience in enterprise environments, including strong hands-on administration of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, server patching, troubleshooting, security hardening, scripting, and support of virtualized infrastructure.
A 4-year degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent combinations of education, certifications, and directly related enterprise Linux administration experience will also be considered. Experience in regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare, or government is strongly preferred.
Systems Engineer II Compensation
$113,900.00 - $120,628.00
SCCU Benefits
  • Health & Wellness: Medical, dental, and vision insurance, plus an Employee Assistance Program.
  • Financial Perks: 401(k) match (5%), HSA match, and SCCU-paid insurance (short/long-term disability, life insurance).
  • Education Support: Tuition reimbursement after one year of service.
  • Generous Time Off: 20+ days of PTO, birthday PTO, and 11 federal holidays.
  • Exclusive Discounts: Lower rates on loans, credit cards, and no fee SCCU accounts!

Work Schedule
  • Monday - Friday: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • This role requires flexibility for after hours and weekend work, as needed, to perform changes and maintenance without impacting business operations.
