Job description

GovCIO is currently hiring for a Senior Linux Systems Engineer to support systems engineering, integration, and sustainment activities supporting the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). This role provides high-level engineering, maintenance, and security for mission-critical RHEL environments. This position will be located in Kearneysville, WV.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will serve as a subject matter expert for the engineering, security, and automation of a robust Linux environment. Core responsibilities include:
  • Lead the administration, configuration, and maintenance of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) servers across virtual and physical enterprise environments.
  • Manage VMware vSphere infrastructure and VMware Cloud Foundation, including the deployment and optimization of virtual machines and hosts.
  • Utilize BMC TrueSight Server Automation (TSSA) to troubleshoot automated scripts and jobs, ensuring system compliance and operational readiness.
  • Ensure all Linux systems are hardened against government baselines, specifically maintaining strict alignment with DISA STIGs.
  • Engineer, maintain, and execute complex Ansible playbooks to automate system configurations, deployments, and "infrastructure as code" initiatives.
  • Implement robust security controls and lead vulnerability remediation efforts to meet federal data protection standards.
  • Monitor system performance and perform expert-level root cause analysis on complex hardware and software issues.
  • Proactively identify potential system risks and design technical solutions to remediate problems before they impact the mission.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for system configurations, engineering processes, and procedures.

Qualifications
High School with 9+ years (or commensurate experience)
Required Skills & Experience
  • DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification (Security+ CE, CySA+, CCNA Security).
  • Demonstrated experience administering the ServiceNow platform in a large-scale enterprise environment.
  • 5+ years of experience in a Senior-level Linux Engineering role with deep expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
  • Strong proficiency in VMware vSphere (ESXi/vCenter) for managing and troubleshooting complex virtualized server environments.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and maintaining complex Ansible playbooks for enterprise-scale configuration management.
  • Proven experience with DISA STIG system hardening, security patching, and ensuring federal cybersecurity compliance.
  • High proficiency in scripting languages, specifically Bash and Python, to automate administrative tasks and streamline operations.

Clearance Required: Active Secret Clearance
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Experience supporting U.S. Coast Guard or Department of Homeland Security (DHS) programs.
  • Direct hands-on experience using BMC TrueSight Server Automation (TSSA) for automated patch management and compliance enforcement.
  • Advanced Linux certifications such as Red Hat Certified System Engineer (RHCE) or Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA).
  • VMware certifications such as VMware Certified Professional (VCP).
  • Knowledge of VMware Aria Automation Orchestrator or VCF Automation Orchestrator.
  • Familiarity with containerization (OpenShift, Docker, or Kubernetes) and cloud technologies (AWS/Azure).
