Job description

About the Team

The Technical Infrastructure team designs, builds, and operates the foundational platforms that power Williams-Sonoma, Inc. across corporate offices, retail locations, fulfillment operations, and customer-facing digital experiences. This includes compute, containers, storage, networking, observability, security, and cloud infrastructure.

Within this organization, the Linux Engineering function is responsible for delivering secure, resilient, and automated Linux platforms and shared services at enterprise scale. The team partners closely with architecture, cybersecurity, cloud, database, application, and operations teams to provide reliable infrastructure and a strong engineering experience for internal customers.

About the Role

As Senior Linux Platform Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, automation, standardization, and lifecycle management of Williams-Sonoma's Linux estate. You will help improve platform reliability, security, scalability, and operational efficiency across on-premises and cloud-hosted environments

This role is ideal for a hands-on infrastructure engineer with strong Linux fundamentals, growing automation capabilities, and sound operational judgment. You will partner closely with senior engineers, architects, and support teams to deliver reliable platform services, improve day-to-day operations, and contribute to the continued evolution of Linux platform engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Define, implement, and maintain enterprise standards for Linux platforms, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux and related tooling.
  • Engineer and support platform capabilities across OS lifecycle management, patching, repository services, configuration management, automation, and platform hardening.
  • Design and optimize Linux platform performance through kernel, system, and application tuning based on capacity, reliability, and availability requirements.
  • Drive automation and infrastructure-as-code practices across provisioning, configuration, patching, compliance, and operational workflows.
  • Leverage AI-assisted engineering practices for personal productivity and continuous improvement, including proactive monitoring workflows, script development, and log analysis to accelerate troubleshooting, reduce manual effort, and improve operational insight.
  • Administer and improve core Linux support services and toolchains such as Satellite, Ansible, GitHub, Kubernetes, Jenkins, and related platform components.
  • Partner with architects and peer engineering teams to evaluate new technologies, run proof-of-concept initiatives, and contribute to the Linux platform roadmap.
  • Gather technical and business requirements; translate them into scalable infrastructure designs and implementation plans.
  • Collaborate closely with production support and Level 2 operations teams to improve runbooks, handoffs, operational readiness, and incident response effectiveness.
  • Create and maintain high-quality engineering documentation, including standards, build guides, implementation records, and operational procedures.
  • Provide data-driven recommendations on platform health, capacity, risk, and modernization opportunities.
  • Share knowledge with other engineers through documentation, collaboration, design reviews, and hands-on problem solving.

Criteria

  • 7+ years of Linux systems engineering experience in enterprise or large-scale environments.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

  • Strong Linux systems engineering experience within enterprise environments, including performance, security, lifecycle management, system hardening, access controls, and operational compliance requirements and troubleshooting.

  • Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and adjacent platform tooling for package management, patching, configuration, hardening, and automation.

  • Hands-on experience with scripting and automation using Bash, Python, and other shell-based tooling.

  • Demonstrated interest in responsibly using AI tools to strengthen personal engineering effectiveness, especially for drafting scripts, identifying patterns in logs and telemetry, and supporting faster root-cause analysis.

  • Strong documentation, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions clearly to engineering and business stakeholders.

  • A practical, collaborative mindset with the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced engineering environment.

  • Familiarity with observability, system monitoring, capacity planning, and service management practices.

  • Experience participating in project delivery, including requirements analysis, implementation planning, execution, and stakeholder communication.

  • This role requires being onsite in the Rocklin, CA office Monday through Thursday.
