Role Summary

Our Linux Engineer will be responsible for owning and maturing Rivian’s Linux platform across the enterprise and Joint Venture. This role requires not only strong technical execution but also architectural vision and leadership to deliver a secure, scalable, and developer-friendly environment.This position will report to our Manger, End User Computing / Services. 


Responsibilities
  • Linux System Management
    • Define and maintain supported Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Fedora, Rocky) and approved hardware models.
    • Lead lifecycle management including OS patching, end-of-life planning, and standard image baselining.
  • Policy, Security & Compliance
    • Establish and enforce CIS hardening standards, encryption, authentication, and auditing.
    • Partner with Security to ensure Rivian IP protection through tooling integration and policy compliance.
  • MDM & Client Management
    • Expand FleetDM coverage across all Rivian and JV endpoints.
    • Integrate endpoint security tools (Microsoft Defender, VPN, certificates/PKI) into the Linux ecosystem.
    • Deliver dashboards and reporting for visibility, compliance, and fleet health.
  • Architecture & Roadmap
    • Develop and maintain a forward-looking Linux roadmap aligned with Rivian’s enterprise priorities and JV expansion.
    • Architect scalable solutions for onboarding, provisioning, package management, observability, and automation.
    • Serve as the technical lead and subject matter expert, influencing cross-functional design decisions and developer enablement.

Qualifications
  • Deep expertise in Linux systems administration and engineering across multiple distributions.
  • Proven experience in FleetDM (or similar MDM/endpoint management tools) at scale.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise security practices (CIS, encryption, identity, PKI, vulnerability management).
  • Ability to architect and deliver scalable platforms in developer-heavy environments.
  • Leadership skills to operate at RIV-6 level: strategic planning, cross-team collaboration, and proactive initiative.

Expected Deliverables (First 6–12 Months)

  • Documented and approved Linux support matrix (distributions, hardware, lifecycle).
  • Standardized, secure Linux baseline deployed across Rivian and JV environments.
  • Expanded FleetDM enrollment and integration with Microsoft Defender, VPN, and PKI (Sectigo).
  • Roadmap aligned with R2/R3 program timelines and JV developer environment needs.

Pay Disclosure

Salary Range for this role is $135,800 - $169,800 for California based applicants. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, shift, and organizational needs.

The successful candidate may be eligible for annual performance bonus and equity awards. 

We offer a comprehensive package of benefits for full-time and part-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26, including but not limited to paid vacation, paid sick leave, and a competitive portfolio of insurance benefits including life, medical, dental, vision, short-term disability insurance, and long-term disability insurance to eligible employees. You may also have the opportunity to participate in Rivian’s 401(k) Plan and Employee Stock Purchase Program if you meet certain eligibility requirements. Full-time employee coverage is effective on their first day of employment. Part-time employee coverage is effective the first of the month following 90 days of employment.
