What is a Linux Infrastructure Engineer?

Linux Infrastructure Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot Linux-based systems and servers that form the backbone of an organization's IT infrastructure. Their responsibilities include managing server deployments, ensuring system security and stability, automating processes, and supporting cloud or on-premises environments. They often work closely with development and operations teams to optimize performance and reliability, making sure that critical business applications run smoothly on Linux platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux Infrastructure Engineer?

To thrive as a Linux Infrastructure Engineer, you need deep expertise in Linux system administration, networking, scripting languages, and often a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, and monitoring systems, as well as certifications such as RHCE or CompTIA Linux+, are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and resolve infrastructure issues efficiently. These skills are critical for ensuring system stability, scalability, and security within complex IT environments.

What are some common challenges Linux Infrastructure Engineers face when managing large-scale server environments?

Linux Infrastructure Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring high availability and reliability across numerous servers, managing configuration drift, and automating repetitive tasks. Security is also a significant concern, requiring constant monitoring for vulnerabilities and timely patching. Additionally, troubleshooting and resolving issues in a distributed environment can be complex, often necessitating strong collaboration with development, security, and networking teams to maintain seamless operations.

What is the difference between Linux Infrastructure Engineer vs System Administrator?

AspectLinux Infrastructure EngineerSystem Administrator
CertificationsLinux certifications (e.g., RHCE, CompTIA Linux+)CompTIA A+, Network+, Linux certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and maintaining Linux-based infrastructureManaging and supporting IT systems, including servers and networks
ResponsibilitiesBuilding scalable Linux systems, scripting, automationMonitoring, troubleshooting, user support

While both roles involve Linux systems, a Linux Infrastructure Engineer focuses on designing and deploying Linux infrastructure, whereas a System Administrator manages day-to-day operations and support. The engineer role is more project-oriented, while the administrator role emphasizes maintenance and troubleshooting.

Job description

Work Model: Hybrid (onsite 3+ days per week, Bay Area – Mid Peninsula, CA)

Minimum Experience: 5+ years IT operations, systems administration, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering

Role Summary

Our client, a mid-stage technology company in the Bay Area operating in a fast-paced engineering environment, is seeking a Senior IT & Infrastructure Engineer. This role is responsible for keeping the engineering organization’s infrastructure and internal systems running reliably, including compute infrastructure, CI/CD systems, monitoring platforms, lab equipment, and internal IT services.

The position is highly hands-on and requires strong Linux and infrastructure engineering expertise, with additional responsibility for tier-1 internal IT support. You will collaborate closely with global DevOps and engineering counterparts to maintain shared infrastructure standards and ensure operational continuity across environments.

This role is best suited for someone who enjoys being the primary go-to engineer for infrastructure reliability, automation, and internal systems support.

Key ResponsibilitiesInfrastructure & Operations
  • Manage compute infrastructure including on-site lab environments (Linux hosts, Jenkins servers, lab equipment) and cloud resources
  • Administer Linux-based systems across engineering environments using configuration management tools (e.g., SaltStack or similar)
  • Build and manage virtualized infrastructure including Docker containers and KVM-based systems
  • Maintain backup and disaster recovery systems for Linux hosts and critical infrastructure
  • Support engineering SaaS tools (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, identity/security tools, developer platforms)
  • Support robotics or hardware-integration lab environments and workflows where applicable

CI/CD & Build Systems
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub and Jenkins for firmware and system builds
  • Ensure build reliability, automated testing, linting, and artifact versioning
  • Integrate quality and validation gates using tools such as SonarScanner, Pytest, and related frameworks
  • Support hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) testing integration into automated pipelines

Monitoring & Alerting
  • Operate and enhance monitoring and observability systems (Grafana-based stacks)
  • Manage dashboards, alerting, and system telemetry across infrastructure environments
  • Implement and troubleshoot alerts for infrastructure health (power states, disk usage, UPS systems, hardware faults, etc.)

Cloud & AWS Operations
  • Support AWS organization-level administration, including account provisioning and governance
  • Assist with security reviews, cost monitoring, and usage reporting

Internal IT Support
  • Provide tier-1 internal IT support for engineering teams (hardware, software, access, and account issues)
  • Manage account provisioning and system configuration workflows
  • Coordinate with external IT vendors and partners on compliance and operational needs

Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in IT operations, systems administration, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering
  • Strong Linux administration skills (Bash), including configuration management, NFS, and backup/recovery systems
  • Hands-on experience with virtualization technologies such as Docker and KVM
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitHub and Jenkins
  • Experience operating monitoring/alerting systems such as Grafana in production environments
  • Familiarity with AWS or similar cloud platforms, including account-level administration and cost monitoring
  • Ability to provide tier-1 internal IT support in a technical engineering environment
  • Strong troubleshooting, debugging, and analytical skills
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, engineering-driven environments
  • Based in the Bay Area with onsite presence required at least 3 days per week

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with external IT vendors and compliance-related IT processes (audits, governance, security reviews)
  • Experience in regulated or compliance-sensitive engineering environments
  • Background in high-growth or early-stage startup environments

Nice to Have
  • Experience supporting firmware or embedded engineering workflows
  • Exposure to telecom or IoT environments (e.g., 5G/LTE systems)
  • Experience managing lab infrastructure, test rigs, or robotics environments
  • Familiarity with code quality tools such as SonarScanner and Pytest
  • Exposure to Elasticsearch or legacy observability systems

Compensation & Work Model
  • Full-time, direct hire position
  • Hybrid schedule with onsite requirement (3+ days per week, Mid Peninsula Bay Area)
  • Role focused on hands-on infrastructure ownership and engineering support across systems and tooling
