What does a Linux build engineer do?

A Linux Build Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining build systems for software projects that run on Linux operating systems. They automate build processes, manage dependencies, troubleshoot build failures, and ensure that software compiles and packages correctly. Additionally, they often collaborate with development and operations teams to streamline continuous integration and delivery pipelines, improving deployment efficiency and software quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux build engineer?

To thrive as a Linux Build Engineer, you need strong expertise in Linux system administration, scripting languages (such as Bash or Python), and build automation concepts, often backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with build tools like Jenkins, Git, Docker, and configuration management systems such as Ansible or Puppet is typically required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure reliable, efficient build processes and enable smooth collaboration in fast-paced development environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by Linux build engineers in managing build automation pipelines?

Linux Build Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistency across multiple environments, troubleshooting complex build failures, and integrating new tools into existing CI/CD pipelines. They must ensure that builds remain reproducible and stable as codebases and dependencies evolve. Collaboration with development, QA, and operations teams is essential to quickly address issues and optimize the build process, making strong communication and problem-solving skills critical in this role.

What is the difference between Linux Build Engineer vs Linux System Administrator?

Job description

Description:

Position Summary

OKSI is seeking an IT Engineer to join our Information Technology team. In this role, the incumbent will design, build, and continuously improve the infrastructure that supports secure software delivery across OKSI's defense and aerospace programs — CI/CD pipelines, hardened Linux environments, multi-cloud infrastructure spanning AWS GovCloud and Azure Government, container and artifact management, and the automation that lets development teams move quickly without compromising compliance. This is a hands-on technical role for a self-driven engineer who takes ownership of the systems they build and plays a central role in standing up and sustaining NIST 800-171 compliant infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, GitHub Actions) across multiple software programs.
  • Build and maintain hardened Linux baselines (RHEL, Alma, Ubuntu); own configuration management and patching.
  • Manage and optimize infrastructure across AWS GovCloud (primary) and Microsoft Azure Government.
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation) with version-controlled, auditable changes.
  • Administer Docker-based container workflows and artifact/image repositories (Nexus, Harbor).
  • Implement secure secrets and encryption key management across the provisioning and delivery lifecycle.
  • Configure monitoring, alerting, and centralized logging (Grafana, Prometheus, or Elastic/ELK).
  • Build and enforce security controls aligned with CMMC and NIST SP 800-171; support ITAR/EAR handling requirements.
Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, platform, or infrastructure engineering.
  • Strong hands-on Linux administration experience, including system hardening and configuration management.
  • Deep experience with a major cloud provider (AWS preferred; AWS GovCloud a significant plus).
  • Demonstrated proficiency with CI/CD platforms, GitLab CI strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker containerization, including image and registry management.
  • Proficiency in scripting/automation using Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • U.S. citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a defense, aerospace, or government contractor environment.
  • Direct experience implementing or operating within CMMC or NIST SP 800-171 boundaries.
  • Experience with hardened Linux distributions (RHEL, Alma) and STIG compliance.
  • Relevant certifications: AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Administrator, Red Hat, HashiCorp Terraform Associate, or CKA.

Compensation and Benefits

  • $42.50 - $57.50 hourly. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications and the budget allocated for this role.
  • Medical, dental, vision fully paid
  • 3 weeks vacation
  • Automatic company contribution to 401K – 5% of earned wages (no matching required)
  • Educational assistance

Additional Requirements:

  • You must have, or be eligible to obtain, a U.S. Department of Defense Secret security clearance. You will be subject to government security investigations and must be able to access classified information. The inability to obtain a security clearance will result in you being ineligible for the position.

ITAR Requirements

  • To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C.
  • 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C.
  • 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. Learn more about the ITAR here.
