Linux Administration Engineer information

What are some common challenges faced by Linux Administration Engineers, and how are they typically addressed?

Linux Administration Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing system uptime during critical updates, troubleshooting complex networking issues, and ensuring the security of multiple servers. These challenges are usually addressed by implementing robust monitoring tools, following best practices for patch management, and collaborating closely with development and security teams. Additionally, ongoing learning and staying updated with the latest Linux distributions and tools help engineers proactively resolve issues and maintain system reliability.

What is the difference between Linux Administration Engineer vs System Administrator?

AspectLinux Administration EngineerSystem Administrator
CertificationsLinux+, RHCE, CompTIA Linux+CompTIA A+, Network+, Linux+ (sometimes)
Work EnvironmentPrimarily Linux servers, data centers, cloud environmentsMixed environments including Windows, Linux, network hardware
ResponsibilitiesManaging Linux systems, scripting, server configurationMaintaining overall IT infrastructure, including networks and hardware

The Linux Administration Engineer focuses specifically on Linux systems, ensuring their stability and security, while the System Administrator manages a broader range of IT infrastructure, including both Linux and Windows environments. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in data centers or enterprise settings, but their scope and daily tasks differ.

What are Linux Administration Engineers?

Linux Administration Engineers are IT professionals who specialize in installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Linux operating systems and related infrastructure. They manage servers, ensure system security, monitor performance, and handle tasks such as software updates, backups, and user management. These engineers play a critical role in keeping enterprise-grade Linux environments stable and secure, often working closely with development and operations teams. Their expertise is essential for organizations relying on Linux-based systems for their applications and services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux Administration Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Linux Administration Engineer, you need deep expertise in Linux operating systems, scripting languages like Bash or Python, and a strong understanding of networking and system security, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related certifications such as RHCE. Proficiency with configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet), virtualization platforms, and monitoring systems is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you address complex issues and work collaboratively with IT teams. These competencies ensure reliable server performance, secure infrastructure, and efficient issue resolution in dynamic technical environments.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled OpenShift Systems Engineer with 8+ years of experience to join our Specialized Services team supporting NASA's Office of Strategic Infrastructure (OSI), Facilities and Real Estate Division (FRED) IT organization.

This role supports an enterprise environment utilizing Red Hat OpenShift to host the IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS) and integrates with IBM Storage Fusion for software-defined storage, backup, and recovery capabilities. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in OpenShift, Kubernetes, Linux administration, automation, and enterprise infrastructure operations.

Key Responsibilities

Red Hat OpenShift & Linux Administration

  • Administer and maintain Red Hat OpenShift clusters in a production enterprise environment.
  • Deploy, manage, and troubleshoot applications running on OpenShift.
  • Support Kubernetes infrastructure, including nodes, clusters, resources, services, policies, and integrations.
  • Apply advanced Linux administration skills, including scripting, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and system optimization.
  • Support backup and recovery operations, disaster recovery (DR), upgrades, patching, and ongoing platform reliability.

Networking & Infrastructure

  • Collaborate with networking and infrastructure teams to implement, optimize, troubleshoot, and maintain hosting environments.
  • Manage DNS, load balancing, routing, firewall requests, and network connectivity.
  • Administer TLS/SSL certificates and certificate lifecycle management.

Monitoring & Observability

  • Implement and maintain monitoring solutions using Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Configure alerting, performance monitoring, and capacity planning capabilities.
  • Support centralized logging and analytics through Splunk log forwarding and management.

Security, Compliance & Access Management

  • Perform system patching and vulnerability remediation.
  • Apply security hardening and SSL configuration best practices.
  • Manage certificates and PKI requirements.
  • Implement and support Zero Trust security principles.
  • Ensure data security for information in transit and at rest.
  • Administer user and group access controls following least-privilege principles.

Automation & Platform Operations

  • Develop and maintain automation solutions using GitOps methodologies and Ansible.
  • Improve operational efficiency through scripting and infrastructure automation.

Continuous Improvement

  • Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and OpenShift best practices.
  • Identify opportunities to improve system performance, reliability, and operational efficiency.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in OpenShift, Kubernetes, Linux, and/or systems engineering.
  • Current Red Hat OpenShift Administration Certification, or the ability to obtain certification within six months of employment.
  • Advanced Linux administration experience, including scripting, system operations, and performance management.
  • Strong experience administering OpenShift clusters, including application deployment, containerization, enterprise implementations, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Red Hat Advanced Cluster Security (ACS).
  • Experience with IBM Storage Fusion for software-defined storage, backup, and recovery.
  • Strong understanding of Kubernetes architecture and concepts.
  • Experience with container technologies and orchestration platforms.
  • Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex OpenShift and infrastructure issues.
  • Proficiency with scripting languages such as Python for automation and system management.
  • Strong knowledge of networking concepts, including DNS, load balancing, routing, firewall rules, and security.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS) and/or IBM TRIRIGA/MREF.
  • Experience with SQL, ETL processes, and reporting tools such as Cognos, BIRT, or Power BI.
  • Knowledge of federal cybersecurity, compliance, and IT governance frameworks, including NIST and FISMA.
  • Familiarity with VMware and NetApp technologies.
  • Experience with Talend or other ETL platforms.
  • Experience supporting large-scale federal facilities, asset management, or real estate management programs.

Why Join Us?

This is an opportunity to support critical NASA infrastructure initiatives while working with modern cloud-native technologies, enterprise-scale platforms, and a collaborative team dedicated to operational excellence and innovation.
