Senior System/Server Engineer

Our IT Infrastructure team is engaged in enterprise cloud transformation and seeks a Senior Systems/Server Engineer. This is a new position.

The Senior Systems/Server Engineer designs, deploys, supports, and optimizes server-based solutions that meet Montefiore's needs in terms of performance, security, availability, scalability, and operational efficiency in both our on-prem data centers as well as Amazon AWS and Azure Clouds. They play a critical role in maintaining the core infrastructure platforms that support enterprise applications, clinical systems, and infrastructure.

The Senior Systems/Server Engineer is responsible for deploying, configuring, supporting, and maintaining physical and virtual server environments that meet Montefiore's needs and requirements. This includes administration of Windows and Linux servers, virtualization platforms, storage, system monitoring tools, patching solutions, backup systems, and related supporting infrastructure. This position plays a critical role in maintaining secure, stable, and highly available infrastructure services across the enterprise. Limited AWS knowledge is required to support hybrid infrastructure needs, but the primary focus of the role is on-premise server engineering and operations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Deploy, configure, administer, and support Windows and Linux server environments that meet Montefiore's needs and requirements
  • Manage on-premise and Cloud physical and virtual server infrastructure, including compute, storage, operating systems, and supporting platform services
  • Administer and support virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, and other hypervisor technologies as needed
  • Ensure the security, stability, and compliance of server environments by implementing system hardening, patching, monitoring, access controls, and operational best practices
  • Support enterprise patching processes for server operating systems and related infrastructure components, ensuring timely remediation of vulnerabilities and operational risks
  • Implement and maintain server monitoring, alerting, logging, and performance management solutions to ensure system health, availability, and reliability
  • Perform server provisioning, upgrades, migrations, decommissioning, and lifecycle management for both physical and virtual infrastructure
  • Collaborate closely with cybersecurity teams to identify and remediate vulnerabilities, support audits, and maintain compliance with organizational security standards
  • Support backup, restore, disaster recovery, and business continuity capabilities for on-premise server systems and related infrastructure as well as Cloud based systems and platforms.
  • Troubleshoot server, virtualization, operating system, and infrastructure platform issues to restore service quickly and minimize business impact
  • Provide technical support and guidance to application teams, infrastructure teams, and third-party stakeholders regarding server hosting requirements and operational support
  • Develop and maintain documentation related to server builds, standards, configurations, procedures, support processes, and infrastructure diagrams
  • Support integration of on-premise environments with select AWS cloud services where needed for hybrid infrastructure, backup, recovery, or application hosting use cases
  • Participate in project planning and execution to ensure server infrastructure solutions are delivered on time and within budget

Requirements include:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in server engineering, systems administration, or infrastructure operations, with a solid background in deploying, administering, and supporting Windows and Linux servers in enterprise environments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing on-premise infrastructure and virtualized server environments at scale is highly desirable. Previous experience working in large, complex organizations is preferred.
  • Strong technical knowledge of server operating systems, virtualization platforms, server monitoring, patch management, backup and restore procedures, and infrastructure support processes.
  • Experience with enterprise server lifecycle management, performance tuning, troubleshooting, security hardening, and operational support.
  • Experience working with Cloud-based systems - AWS cloud services is preferred.
  • Experience with/exposure to devops.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively across infrastructure, application, and cybersecurity teams.
  • Must hold and/or be able to pass security clearance requirements, background investigation, reference, and credentials verification.

The position requires advanced knowledge of:

  • Windows Server administration, including Active Directory integration, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and core infrastructure services
  • Linux server administration, including system configuration, user and permission management, shell operations, package management, and service troubleshooting
  • Virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, template management, snapshots, clustering, and host lifecycle management
  • Server patching technologies, vulnerability remediation processes, and maintenance planning for Windows and Linux environments
  • Enterprise monitoring, alerting, logging, and performance management tools used to support server and infrastructure operations
  • Backup, restore, disaster recovery, and business continuity processes for physical and virtual server environments
  • Server hardware, storage, and connectivity concepts in data center and on-premise infrastructure environments
  • Integration of on-premise infrastructure with AWS cloud services in hybrid environments, including foundational understanding of EC2, storage, identity, networking, and backup-related services
  • Infrastructure security best practices, access controls, system hardening, and operational compliance requirements.

The candidate must possess well-developed skills in:

  • Deploying, configuring, and supporting enterprise Windows and Linux servers across development, test, and production environments
  • Managing server virtualization platforms and supporting operational activities such as provisioning, migration, capacity planning, and decommissioning
  • Troubleshooting complex server, operating system, virtualization, and infrastructure issues and restoring service in a timely manner
  • Working with diverse populations of stakeholders, including business leaders, technical information staff, application teams, and other IT professionals, to effectively communicate server-related issues and solutions
  • Documenting server standards, build procedures, operational runbooks, technical diagrams, and support processes
  • Coordinating patching, monitoring, maintenance windows, and remediation activities across multiple server environments
  • Supporting audits, security reviews, and compliance activities through disciplined operational controls and documentation.

The position must demonstrate the ability to:

  • Possess strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to effectively assess and generate solutions for complex server and infrastructure challenges
  • Respond promptly and efficiently to operational incidents affecting physical and virtual server environments, including root cause analysis and remediation planning
  • Take a leadership role in developing technical plans and solutions to address server platform challenges, which may involve coordinating with cross-functional teams, communicating with stakeholders, and implementing automation where appropriate
