What is a linguistic engineer?

A Linguistic Engineer is a professional who combines expertise in linguistics and computer science to develop language technologies such as speech recognition systems, natural language processing (NLP) tools, and machine translation software. They work on designing and implementing algorithms that allow computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language. Their work is essential in improving digital assistants, chatbots, and other AI-driven language applications.

How does a linguistic engineer typically collaborate with software developers and data scientists on language technology projects?

Linguistic Engineers often work closely with software developers and data scientists to build and refine natural language processing (NLP) tools and applications. They bring expertise in linguistics and language data, helping to create annotated corpora, develop language models, and ensure the linguistic accuracy of algorithms. Regular communication and teamwork are essential, as Linguistic Engineers translate linguistic requirements into technical specifications, troubleshoot language-related issues, and support model evaluation. This collaborative environment fosters learning and innovation, making cross-functional teamwork a key aspect of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a linguistic engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Linguistic Engineer, you need a strong background in computational linguistics, programming (commonly Python or Java), and natural language processing (NLP), typically supported by a degree in linguistics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with NLP frameworks like NLTK or spaCy, machine learning libraries, and experience with annotation tools or speech recognition systems are often required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and solving complex language problems. These skills are crucial for developing accurate language technologies and ensuring that NLP applications perform reliably in real-world scenarios.

What is the difference between Linguistic Engineer vs Speech Scientist?

AspectLinguistic EngineerSpeech Scientist
Required CredentialsDegree in linguistics, computer science, or related field; experience with NLP and programmingDegree in linguistics, speech pathology, or related field; focus on speech processing and acoustics
Work EnvironmentTech companies, AI development, software labsResearch institutions, universities, healthcare, speech technology firms
Employer & Industry UsageTech industry, AI, NLP projectsAcademic, healthcare, speech recognition, and processing industries

While both roles involve language and speech, Linguistic Engineers focus on developing NLP systems and language models, whereas Speech Scientists specialize in understanding and analyzing speech production and perception. The roles often overlap in speech technology projects but differ in their core focus and expertise areas.

Do linguistic engineers get paid well?

Linguistic engineers typically earn competitive salaries that reflect their specialized skills in natural language processing, machine learning, and computational linguistics. Salaries vary based on experience, education, and location, but they are generally above average compared to many other tech roles. Advanced skills in programming and familiarity with AI tools can also influence compensation levels.

Job description

Impact Scale LLC is seeking a highly skilled, infrastructure-minded Senior PHP Developer to join our technical engineering division. In this critical engineering role, you will take hands-on ownership of enhancing, maintaining, and scaling our flagship communications platform—a mission-critical, high-load system engineered to deliver reliable, high-speed transactional messaging at massive scale.

The ideal candidate thrives when dealing with the architectural challenges of high-concurrency systems, massive database loads, and distributed message queues handling millions of daily requests. You will plug directly into our existing workflow, partnering with cross-functional technical teams to defend platform uptime, eliminate data latency, and pioneer robust backend features.

Key Responsibilities

Core Backend Architecture Microservices

  • Feature Engineering: Design, build, and optimize clean, reliable, and testable backend features leveraging advanced PHPframeworks (specifically Laravel).

  • Pipeline Optimization: Maximize message delivery pipelines, core execution speeds, and RESTful API structures to ensure ultra-low latency and zero transmission degradation.

  • Integrations Governance: Maintain and build fault-tolerant integrations with carrier network APIs, external telecommunication services, and internal distributed microservices.

  • Resiliency Engineering: Implement modern object-oriented programming (OOP), Model-View-Controller (MVC) paradigms, and strong automated error-handling frameworks to safeguard system resilience.

Database Optimization Concurrency Scaling

  • High-Transaction Modeling: Design, monitor, and optimize advanced MySQLdatabase schemas structured around large, high-velocity datasets and heavy transactional rates.

  • Query Performance Tuning: Audit execution profiles, build tactical indexes, and refactor complex queries to prevent bottlenecks across database layers.

  • Distributed Queues Caching: Scale and maintain distributed message queuing infrastructures (specifically RabbitMQ/ Ribbit MQ), advanced key-value caching layers, and front-end load-balancing systems to seamlessly absorb millions of concurrent daily inputs.

Technical Operations Peer Leadership

  • Cross-Functional Synergy: Partner with Product Managers, DevOps Engineers, and Quality Assurance (QA) teams to reliably ship stable, production-ready code.

  • Environment Maintenance: Build, run, and scale local containerized development environments utilizing Docker, tracking tasks across Jiraand auditing source trees through Gitversion control.

  • Code Mentorship: Deliver actionable peer code reviews and provide structured technical guidance to junior developers to protect internal engineering standards.

Qualifications Skills

Required

  • Experience Depth: 5+ years of progressive professional experience in backend PHP engineering, with heavy focus inside the Laravelecosystem.

  • Database Fluency: 3+ years of advanced hands-on experience in SQL engineering, data modeling, and deep database performance tuning.

  • High-Load Exposure: Proven track record engineering structural components for high-load platforms, transactional processing hubs, or enterprise-scale communication systems.

  • Queue Architecture: Practical, working familiarity with high-concurrency message queuing networks (such as RabbitMQ).

  • Linguistic Skill: Fluent, native-level verbal and written command of Ukrainianor Russianto ensure flawless operational synchronization with our existing core engineering team.

Preferred

  • Active familiarity with Git branching strategies, continuous integration / continuous deployment (CI/CDpipelines), Docker containerization, and Jira issue tracking workflows.

  • Prior experience working inside high-volume telecom, SMS routing gateways, performance marketing networks, or fintech platforms.

Compensation Benefits

  • Health Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance packages (Available following a standard 90-day introductory period).
