Overview
JOB TITLE: Emergency Room Technician
CC/Department: 7010/Emergency Services
Reports to: Nurse Manager
JOB SUMMARY:
The Emergency Department Technician is a member of the health care team who assists in the delivery of total patient care, under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Physician.
Responsibilities
POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES (other duties may be assigned)

Relates to patients in a courteous and helping manner appropriate to a professional setting. Maintains a positive customer service attitude.

Prepares/assists patients for examination and treatment
  1. Provides clean gown and blanket as needed
  2. Positions patients appropriately for procedures.
  3. Assembles supplies and equipment needed for care and treatment of patients.
  4. Maintains treatment room in a clean and neat manner.
  5. Removes and deposits soiled linen/trash in designated containers.
  6. Maintains privacy and respects the dignity of each patient.
  7. Follows universal precautions for infection control.
  8. Reports significant observations to nursing and/or physician staff.

Performs and/or assists in the performance of the following patient related tasks and interventions under the order and supervision of a Registered Nurse or Physician:
  1. Application of behavioral restraints (with valid physician order).
  2. Application of cardiac monitor, NIBP, and O2.
  3. Application of heat and cold.
  4. Application of orthopedic devices and software goods including; finger splints, wrist splints, ace bandages, knee immobilizes, posterior plaster splints, etc.
  5. Applications of simple dressings including, tube gauze and pressure dressings.
  6. Assists with pelvic examinations (female Emergency Technicians only).
  7. Assists with suturing.
  8. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
  9. Charts procedures performed, e.g., application of dressings and splints, vital signs, etc.
  10. Crutch fitting, teaching of crutch walking.
  11. Electrocardiograms
  12. Measures and charts Intake and Output.
  13. Orthopedic skills to include application of ace wraps, splints, and immobilizers.
  14. Skin, hair, and oral care.
  15. Specimen collection.
  16. Suctioning (oral).
  17. Transfers and Transports patients.
  18. Vital Signs
  19. Wound preparation.

Orders, organizes and maintains supplies from Central Service and Store Room within established guidelines and limits:
  1. Maintains appropriate stock levels of department supplies.
  2. Is conscious of need for cost containment.
  3. Orders special orthopedic supplies and non-stocked items as needed.
  4. Stocks treatment areas with appropriate level of supplies and clean linen.
  5. Delivers instruments, trays and equipment to Central Service for exchange or reprocessing.
  6. Ensures proper storage and operation of department equipment.
  7. Facilitates repair of broken/damaged equipment.
  8. Completes daily reconciliation of supply system.

Completes all documentation as required.

Maintains EMT/CNA certification, BLS, DAB, and other related training.

Assists with orientation of new employees.

Participates in the clinical observation visits of the EMT students.

Maintains confidentiality of all patient and hospital related communications and documentation.

Fosters a cooperative effort in meeting the goals of the team and sharing the workload.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS/JOB REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
  • DAB; 12 lead EKG; and orthopedic procedure experience preferred.
  • 2 years current ER Tech experience preferred

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
  • Current certification as an EMT1 preferred.
  • CNA certification preferred.
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (CPR) certification.

OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE:
  • Proficient in computerized documentation systems.
