The Linebacker Coach is responsible for the recruitment, development, training, and game-day performance of the linebacker position group (inside linebackers, outside linebackers, and any hybrid roles). This coach will teach proper technique, football intelligence, and aggressive defensive play while fostering character, discipline, academics, and teamwork. The role supports the overall vision of the head coach and defensive staff to build a championship-caliber defense in a high school environment.

Reports To: Head Football Coach and/or Defensive Coordinator

Season: Fall (August through November/December), with spring/summer offseason expectations

Key Responsibilities

 Player Development & Position Coaching

Design and lead daily position-specific drills for linebackers focusing on: run defense (gap fits, run reads, spill techniques), pass coverage (zone, man, hook/curl drops), blitzing/pass rushing, tackling fundamentals, shedding blocks, and pursuit angles.

Teach film study, pre-snap reads, defensive play recognition, and high football IQ specific to the linebacker position.

Conduct individual and small-group sessions to improve speed, agility, strength, and overall athleticism tailored to linebacker demands.

 Practice & Game Preparation

Assist in planning and organizing defensive practices, including linebacker walkthroughs and team periods.

Help install and teach the defensive scheme (base, nickel, dime packages, etc.) with emphasis on linebacker alignments and responsibilities.

Scout opponents (with defensive staff) to prepare linebacker-specific adjustments and keys for each game.

Participate in game-day coaching: sideline communication, in-game adjustments, and situational decision support.

 Program & Team Support

Support the head coach and defensive coordinator in building team culture, discipline, and accountability.

Assist with overall team conditioning, weight room supervision, and offseason training (when applicable).

Help monitor academic progress, attendance, and eligibility of linebacker group athletes.

Promote sportsmanship, leadership, and positive representation of the school/community.

Participate in recruiting/local middle school outreach, summer camps, 7-on-7 events, and program fundraising/community service activities as needed.

 Administrative & Compliance Duties

Maintain accurate records of player attendance, progress, and injury reports.

Ensure full compliance with school district, state high school athletic association (e.g., PIAA in PA), and NFHS rules and safety protocols.

Assist with equipment inventory, field setup, and other program logistics as assigned.
