What is a Line Tech job?

A Line Tech, or Line Technician, is responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and servicing aircraft or industrial equipment. In aviation, Line Techs assist with fueling, towing, and general upkeep of aircraft on the tarmac. They ensure safety protocols are followed and that equipment is in optimal working condition. This job often involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and requires attention to detail.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Line Tech position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Line Tech, you need strong mechanical aptitude, technical troubleshooting skills, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent, with some employers requiring specialized certifications in electronics or aviation maintenance. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, maintenance software, and industry-specific systems like FAA regulations (for aviation) or manufacturing machinery is common. Attention to detail, dependability, and effective communication help Line Techs excel in team settings and navigate complex tasks. These skills ensure proper equipment operation, minimize downtime, and support overall workplace safety and productivity.

What are some typical challenges faced by Line Techs in their daily work?

Line Techs often encounter challenges such as diagnosing hard-to-find equipment issues, meeting tight maintenance schedules, and adapting to rapidly changing work demands. Working in environments that may be noisy, outdoors, or require shift work can also pose unique demands. However, these challenges are balanced by valuable opportunities to develop hands-on troubleshooting skills, collaborate closely with experienced team members, and take on increasing responsibilities. Many employers offer structured training and advancement paths, helping dedicated Line Techs progress toward higher-level technical or supervisory roles.

  • Provide technical guidance, perform design reviews, and support quality control across project deliverables.
  • Assist in proposal development, including cost estimating, scope definition, and scheduling contributions.
  • Work closely with other Power Delivery disciplines such as civil/structural, distribution, and substation engineering.

What You'll Need to Be Successful
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proficiency with PLS software, including PLS-CADD.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a proven commitment to safety and customer service.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to enter transmission ROWs and construction sites with appropriate PPE.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
Preferred Experience
  • Minimum 3+ years of transmission line design engineering experience.
  • Prior utility experience, preferably with Southeastern U.S. utilities.
