What is a line handler?

Line handlers are workers responsible for securing and releasing the mooring lines of vessels during docking and undocking at ports or harbors. Their main duties include handling ropes and cables, ensuring ships are safely moored to docks, and communicating with the ship’s crew and dock personnel. Line handlers play a critical role in maritime operations by helping to prevent accidents and ensuring vessels remain stable while at port. This job often requires physical strength, quick reflexes, and a strong understanding of maritime safety procedures.

What is the difference between Line Handler vs Deckhand?

AspectLine HandlerDeckhand
Required CertificationsBasic safety training, STCW certifications often requiredSimilar safety certifications, additional maritime certifications may be preferred
Work EnvironmentOnboard ships, docks, or marinas, working outdoors in marine settingsOnboard ships, docks, or offshore platforms, working outdoors in marine environments
Employer & Industry UsageMaritime shipping, fishing, recreational boatingCommercial shipping, fishing vessels, offshore industries
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for entry-level maritime roles involving line handling tasksBroader role including maintenance and assisting with ship operations

In summary, a Line Handler primarily focuses on managing ropes, lines, and mooring tasks, while a Deckhand has a broader role that includes assisting with ship maintenance, navigation, and other deck operations. Both roles require safety certifications and work in marine environments, but Deckhands typically have a wider scope of responsibilities.

How much do line handlers make?

Line handlers typically earn between $150 and $300 per day, depending on experience, location, and the specific vessel. They often work on sailboats, yachts, or commercial ships, and may receive additional compensation for overnight or long-term assignments.

What are the main challenges a line handler faces during vessel docking and undocking operations?

Line Handlers often work in dynamic and sometimes unpredictable conditions, such as varying weather or tidal changes, which can make securing or releasing mooring lines physically demanding and require constant attentiveness. Safety is a top priority, as the role involves heavy equipment and moving vessels, so Line Handlers must remain vigilant and communicate effectively with dock and vessel crews. Adapting to changing schedules and shifts, especially during busy port periods, is also a common challenge, but these experiences help build resilience and teamwork skills valued in maritime careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a line handler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Line Handler, you need strong knowledge of maritime operations, basic seamanship, and physical fitness, often supported by experience working on docks or vessels. Familiarity with mooring equipment, safety procedures, and sometimes certifications like a TWIC card are typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for ensuring safe and efficient vessel docking. These skills are vital to prevent accidents, maintain vessel security, and support smooth port operations.

Job description

Description
Do you take it personally when a label is wrong or a part gets to the wrong bay?
Are you the kind of person who already knows where everything is - and notices immediately when something's not where it belongs?
Do you feel the pull of a fast-moving floor and a shift that actually ends on time because you ran it right?
Are you the teammate the build line depends on - and you wouldn't have it any other way?
If this sounds like you, then we need to talk...
Frazer, a leading builder of emergency medical vehicles, is currently seeking a Material Handler (Levels I-III) to join our Distribution team at our Houston production facility. Material Handlers are the engine behind Frazer's build lines - keeping parts, materials, and inventory moving so the people who build life-saving vehicles never have to wait. Whether you're just getting started in a warehouse career or you're a seasoned handler ready to step into a lead role, there's a level here for you.
What Does a Week in the Life of the Material Handler Look Like?
  • Pulls materials from warehouse stock to fill production orders and requisitions - and makes sure every item is labeled and logged before it leaves the shelf.
  • Walks the floor delivering issued materials to production work centers, keeping every build bay stocked and on schedule before the shift ends.
  • Runs the system - issues material out in the WMS before physical delivery, so inventory counts stay honest and the data matches the floor.
  • Monitors KanBan levels at assigned work centers and replenishes before the line notices a gap.
  • Handles material returns, urgent substitutions, and job-order changes without breaking stride.
  • Operates forklifts, pallet jacks, and product pickers to move heavy and bulky materials safely across a busy warehouse floor.
  • (Level III) Trains incoming handlers, sets the pace on the floor, and steps in as the first point of escalation when the supervisor is out.
Required Education and Experience:
  • (Level I) 0-1 year of experience in warehouse, material handling, or a manufacturing environment.
  • (Level II) 1-3 years of material handling experience with demonstrated proficiency in inventory management and system accuracy.
  • (Level III) 3+ years of material handling experience; proven ability to lead, train, and own process outcomes.
  • Proficiency with warehouse management software; ability to issue, track, and reconcile inventory in the system.
  • Ability to operate pallet jacks, product pickers, and forklifts following Frazer certification training.
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Forklift certification and documented equipment experience in a manufacturing warehouse.
  • Experience with KanBan systems or lean manufacturing practices.
  • Familiarity with ERP or inventory management platforms (Job Manager, ShopTrack, or equivalent).
Skills (to Pay the Bills)
Here's a list of a few competencies that the Material Handler at Frazer should have...
  • You're precise by nature - a mislabeled part or a quantity that doesn't match the screen bothers you until you fix it.
  • You follow through without being chased - if you said it's getting there by end of shift, it gets there.
  • You're steady and dependable - you show up, keep your pace, and take care of your equipment like it's yours.
  • You know your way around a warehouse system - you don't need someone to walk you through issuing and tracking materials every day.
  • You communicate like a pro - when something's out of stock or a delivery is at risk, you say so before it becomes someone else's problem.
  • You take pride in your craft - you do things the right way because that's just how you work, not because someone's watching.
Why Frazer?
Frazer is a fast-growing company pushing the boundaries of what's possible in mobile healthcare. You'll join a team of driven, diverse people who take their work seriously and each other personally. We rely on our core values, invest in our people's growth, and give everyone room to unleash their potential.
What's in it for you:
  • A weekly paycheck - you get paid every Friday.
  • Company shutdown from Christmas through New Year's, plus 10 paid holidays and PTO that starts accruing from day one.
  • On-site micromarket, flexible schedules, and a real work-life balance.
  • Free financial wellness classes plus professional development and skills training.
  • 401k with company match, health, dental, and disability coverage.
  • A culture built on honesty, accountability, and continuous improvement - not politics.
Compensation
Level I: $18.00 - $21.00 / hour
Level II: $21.00 - $24.00 / hour
Level III: $25.00 - $28.00 / hour
Commensurate with education, certifications, and experience.
Schedule & Location
Monday - Friday | 5:00 AM - 1:30 PM
7227 Rampart St., Bldg. A, Houston, TX 77081
No travel required. Occasional evening/weekend work may be needed.
