Position Summary... What you'll do...Role summary:
The Senior Manager, Controls Engineering serves as Walmart's internal subject matter authority for HVAC/R/L building automation systems (BAS) across the enterprise retail portfolio. This role owns BAS design and installation standards, drives communication protocol specification and standardization, and delivers hardware-agnostic solutions that shift building controls from physical devices to software-defined platforms. The position leads prototype development, pilots next-generation building automation and energy management solutions, and enforces IT/OT security policy across Walmart's OT environment -- collaborating with Construction, Facilities Services, IT, and external vendors to deliver scalable, connected controls at enterprise scale.
About the team:
The Digital Enablement team leads Walmart’s enterprise asset strategy, focusing on refrigeration, HVAC, and lighting controls across retail facilities. This team drives the long-term vision and digital transformation of physical assets by integrating connected, BAS-agnostic systems. Members collaborate across functions to develop advanced telemetry and condition-based monitoring solutions, optimizing asset lifecycles. The team emphasizes engineering standards, vendor alignment, IT/OT security, and scalable data-driven initiatives, fostering innovation, continuous improvement, and technical leadership to enhance operational efficiency throughout Walmart’s store portfolio.
What you'll do:
  • Standardize & Modernize: Author and evolve Walmart's BAS Design and Installation Guidelines to align with current enterprise requirements
  • Unified Protocols: Standardize controller points, module names, and protocols (BACnet, Modbus) across all facility types.
  • Drive BAS technology from prototype and pilot design to full enterprise rollout.
  • Manage Engineering Changes: Issue Design (DIs) and Construction Initiatives (CIs) to resolve field gaps.
  • IoT Evolution: Shift hardware devices to software to enable scalable remote diagnostics and telemetry.
  • Resolve active construction RFIs and provide escalation support for critical field failures.
  • Ensure OT infrastructure complies strictly with Walmart's IT security policies
  • Collaborate with Construction, Facilities, and IT leadership to integrate standards.

What you'll bring:
  • BAS Expertise: Deep knowledge of controller programming, points configuration, and multi-protocol architecture (BACnet, Modbus).
  • HVAC/R Experience: Hands-on technical experience with commercial refrigeration, HVAC, and lighting controls across multi-vendor environments.
  • Standards Development: Proven history of authoring enterprise engineering standards, construction specifications, and design guidelines.
  • Experience leading prototype development, technology pilots, and IT/OT coordination to scale.
  • IT/OT Security: Practical knowledge of securing operational technology and enforcing building controls compliance.
  • Familiarity with hardware-to-software migration, IoT telemetry, and energy management platforms.
  • Technical Writing: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to author clear specs for technicians and executives.
  • Proven ability to build consensus across Engineering, Construction, IT, Legal, and Facilities teams.
