What is a lighting distributor?

Lighting distributors are companies or individuals who purchase lighting products, such as bulbs, fixtures, and controls, from manufacturers and then sell them to retailers, contractors, or end-users. They play a crucial role in the supply chain by providing access to a wide range of lighting solutions, offering product expertise, and often assisting with logistics and technical support. Lighting distributors can serve commercial, industrial, and residential markets, ensuring customers get the right products for their needs.

What are some common challenges lighting distributors face when managing client projects?

Lighting Distributors often encounter challenges such as coordinating delivery schedules with tight project timelines, ensuring compatibility of lighting products with clients' technical requirements, and managing inventory to prevent delays. Effective communication with manufacturers, contractors, and end-users is crucial to address specification changes or supply chain issues. Staying up-to-date with the latest lighting technologies and regulations also helps distributors provide valuable guidance to clients and maintain a competitive edge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lighting distributor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lighting Distributor, you need a solid understanding of lighting products, sales techniques, and market trends, often supported by experience in electrical supply or wholesale distribution. Familiarity with inventory management systems, customer relationship management (CRM) software, and product cataloging tools is typically required. Strong negotiation, customer service, and communication skills help build lasting client relationships and resolve issues efficiently. These skills are crucial for maximizing sales opportunities, ensuring customer satisfaction, and maintaining a competitive edge in the lighting industry.

Senior Electrical Estimator / Pre-Construction Manager

ACCENT ELECTRICAL SERVICES CORP

Broomfield, CO

$103K - $136K/yr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Job description

Description

Accent Electrical Services is a commercial electrical contractor based in Broomfield, Colorado. We work along the Colorado Front Range, occasionally estimating specific travel projects in Wyoming, Colorado Springs, and Summit County. We're looking for a seasoned estimator to run our estimating process from first budget through award - someone who understands that client relationships are built over years. This position reports directly to ownership, and formal, hands-on training with our current estimating team is included to ensure a smooth transition into the position.

What you will do:

Prepare complete hard-bid and negotiated estimates for commercial electrical projects up to $9,000,000 in electrical contract value. As one of two estimators, you will carry an individual bid load of approximately $45-70 million per year.

Build conceptual and schematic budgets from SD and DD documents - filling gaps with sound judgment & historical knowledge where drawings are incomplete, and carrying appropriate design-growth contingency through each phase.

Track and reconcile estimates and pricing changes through each design phase (Concept -  SD - DD - CD), documenting scope growth and communicating cost movement to clients before it becomes a surprise.

Convert winning bids into working project budgets and hand off cleanly to project management - providing pricing, quantities, and takeoff information for PMs and foremen to use at buyout.

Drive value engineering: identify real cost-saving alternates in gear, lighting, distribution, and means and methods - and present them credibly to GCs, owners, and design teams.

Work directly with our established GC and owner client base from pursuit through project completion - attend pre-bids, scope reviews, and post-bid interviews.

Perform quantity takeoffs, solicit and level vendor and supplier quotes, and manage bid-day assembly.

Monitor commodity pricing (copper, aluminum, steel, oil) and major quotable equipment lead times, and reflect current market conditions in every number we put out.

Update and maintain permit fee and sales/use-tax requirements by jurisdiction, and apply them correctly in every estimate.

Serve as the administrator of our Accubid Pro estimating database: update material pricing and verify price increases via Trade Service (Tra-Ser) online, review updates to spot errors, change part numbers as needed (e.g., "halted" items), maintain labor units and difficulty factors, and build new items and assemblies.

Manage electronic bid solicitations in Procore, BuildingConnected, and similar ITB and online plan-room platforms: accept/decline invitations, review plans and specs, download and organize bid documents, complete GC bid forms, and submit proposals on time.

Maintain bid tracking - hit rates, historical pricing, and bid spreads by client and project type - and use that history to sharpen future pricing and bid/no-bid decisions.

Compile bid forms, marketing packets, and bid-specific prequalification documents.

Provide day-to-day direction and mentorship to one supporting estimator.

This is not the full job description of the position, but a summary

Requirements

7+ years of commercial electrical estimating experience (contractor side) and 10+ years total in the electrical industry (field, design, or estimating), with a track record of successful bids in the $1M-$10M range.

Proficiency in Trimble Accubid Pro (required).

Hands-on experience maintaining an Accubid material database - Trade Service (Tra-Ser) pricing updates, part number corrections, and building items and assemblies (strongly preferred).

Proficiency in PlanSwift or a similar digital takeoff platform such as On-Screen Takeoff or Trimble LiveCount (required).

Experience managing bid invitations and documents in Procore, BuildingConnected, and similar ITB/plan-room platforms.

Experience across multiple project delivery methods - design-bid-build (hard bid), design-build, design-assist, and CM/GC (CM at Risk).

Strong Microsoft Excel and Word skills - Excel for estimating tools, historical data and analysis, budget models, bid tabs, and escalation tracking (VBA helpful); Word for proposals, scope letters, and client correspondence.

Professional business writing: emails, proposal letters, scope clarifications, and qualifications, etc.

Proficiency in Bluebeam Revu - our primary platform for PDF viewing, editing, markup, and plan management.

Valid driver's license and insurable driving record (a company vehicle is provided).

Understanding of the NEC, applicable NFPA standards, and Colorado and local AHJ amendments and requirements.

Experience estimating a broad range of commercial work - schools, government, multifamily, office/TI, core/shell, remodel, retail, restaurant, tilt-up, and site work, among other project types.

Ability to review a complete document set, including specifications, across all disciplines - catching errors, omissions, and coordination issues that affect the electrical scope.

Preferred: journeyman or master electrician license, field background, or construction management degree. Design-build/design-assist budgeting experience and familiarity with prevailing wage bidding are strong pluses.

Compensation:

Salary range: $110,000 - $145,000 per year, depending on experience, plus discretionary performance bonus.
