Lighthouse Services information

What are Lighthouse Services?

Lighthouse services refer to the range of operations and maintenance activities carried out to ensure the proper functioning of lighthouses. These services include maintaining the lighthouse structure, its lighting and signaling equipment, ensuring the navigational aids are operational, and sometimes providing weather and maritime information to ships. The main goal of lighthouse services is to ensure maritime safety by guiding ships and preventing accidents along coastlines and hazardous areas.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in Lighthouse Services, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Lighthouse Services often encounter challenges such as working in remote and sometimes harsh environments, maintaining equipment under varying weather conditions, and ensuring consistent communication with maritime and onshore teams. Adaptability, strong problem-solving skills, and a proactive approach to maintenance are crucial for overcoming these hurdles. Many organizations provide regular safety training and support networks to help team members stay connected and manage the unique demands of lighthouse operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Lighthouse Services roles, and why are they important?

To thrive in Lighthouse Services roles, such as Lighthouse Keeper or Maintenance Technician, you need mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and a background in electrical or maritime systems, often supported by vocational training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with navigation aids, emergency communication systems, and maintenance tools is typically required. Strong self-motivation, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in remote locations are standout soft skills. These skills ensure the reliable operation of navigational aids, safety for mariners, and smooth handling of emergencies in isolated environments.

Status: Full-Time

Benefits: Competitive Salary, 401(k), Health Insurance, Generous Paid Time Off

At the Lighthouse our mission is to create safe, healing environments where all individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered to pursue personal growth and stability. We strive to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and walk alongside those facing life-controlling challenges such as trauma, addiction, and homelessness. Through emergency shelter, case management, and supportive services, we seek not only to address immediate needs but to foster lasting, positive change. Our vision is to help individuals break cycles of hardship and achieve meaningful transformation, ensuring that everyone in Central Oregon has the opportunity to find hope, stability, and healing.

We are seeking a passionate and mission-driven Daytime Safety Monitor to help expand the impact of Shepherd’s House Ministries across all sites and advance this life-changing work.

The Daytime Safety Monitor will protect and enhance the safety, security, and integrity of The Lighthouse Navigation Center (“The Lighthouse”), specifically focusing on its Daytime participants. The Daytime Safety Monitor helps ensure a safe, welcoming, and well-managed environment for program participants, staff, and neighbors. This role protects the safety and integrity of the Lighthouse Navigation Center by monitoring on-site activity, addressing safety concerns, engaging guests with compassion and professionalism, and guiding staff in safety awareness and de-escalation practices.

The Daytime Safety Monitor will perform their duties and responsibilities to care for the needs of The Lighthouse participants, enhance the fulfillment of The Lighthouse mission, collaborate well with all community partners and neighbors, and provide a safe and healing environment for everyone at The Lighthouse.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain a welcoming, safe environment where participants can access day-use services and navigation support.
  • Monitor the facility and surrounding neighborhood through standing watch and patrols; identify and respond to safety concerns; and notify staff or law enforcement when necessary.
  • Support the safety and security of the Lighthouse property by maintaining knowledge of the facility layout, compliance requirements, and fire/hazard prevention measures.
  • Engage individuals calmly and respectfully to assess situations, provide clear guidance, and apply trauma-informed, de-escalation-focused practices to prevent conflict or use of force.
  • Guide participants in safe and responsible conduct by applying Lighthouse policies, including Relational Agreements, Good Neighbor Agreements, Prohibited Items, Points of Cooperation, and related safety guidelines.
  • Serve as a safety leader for staff by communicating risks, reinforcing safety protocols, and participating in required SHM training.
  • Maintain awareness of individuals who are separated, trespassed, or restricted from services, and ensure staff are informed through meetings, email updates, and incident documentation.
  • Prepare and distribute Guest Incident Reports and other necessary safety documentation.
  • Communicate relevant safety updates during shift changes, including coordination with contracted security.
  • Help maintain positive relationships with neighbors and support the cleanliness and order of the surrounding area.
  • Complete general administrative and operational tasks, including use of email and documentation systems, maintaining clean work areas, and safeguarding filing systems.
  • Provide support for our front desk as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Navigation Services, Director of Emergency Services, or other authorized SHM staff.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or training in social services, security, or a related field is a plus.
  • Previous experience in a similar role, preferably in a shelter or social service setting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a diverse community.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care and de-escalation techniques.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry.

Work Conditions

  • The candidate should be capable of engaging in physical activity as needed to ensure safety and security.
  • Interpersonal Interaction: Engaging with participants and staff, often requiring de-escalation skills and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Emotional Resilience: Maintaining a calm demeanor in high-stress situations.
  • Environment: Exposure to outdoor elements during patrols and potentially odorous environments due to guests’ circumstances.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the facility and surrounding property for extended periods.
  • Ability to respond quickly to safety or emergency situations.
  • Ability to bend, reach, and occasionally lift or carry items up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to see, hear, and communicate effectively to monitor activity and interact with others.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions and maintain alertness during extended shifts.
