What is a light rail transit operator?

Light rail transit operators are professionals responsible for driving and managing light rail vehicles, which are trains that typically run on urban tracks and provide public transportation within cities. They ensure the safe and timely operation of the trains, assist passengers, monitor equipment, and respond to emergencies or disruptions. Operators follow strict schedules, adhere to safety protocols, and may also handle basic troubleshooting of the vehicle. Their role is crucial in providing efficient and reliable transit services to the public.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a light rail transit operator?

To thrive as a Light Rail Transit Operator, you need a high school diploma or equivalent, strong attention to safety, and knowledge of transit regulations. Familiarity with train control systems, signaling technology, and sometimes possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) are typically required. Excellent communication, situational awareness, and customer service skills help operators manage passengers and respond to unexpected situations. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of light rail services for the public.

What challenges do light rail transit operators face during their shifts?

Light Rail Transit Operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining strict adherence to schedules while ensuring passenger safety and comfort. They must remain alert to monitor track conditions, signals, and unexpected obstacles, especially during inclement weather or heavy traffic times. Job description

Arcadis is the world's leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets.

We are more than 34,000 people, in over 30 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world's most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a Track Site Engineer to join our growing Rail & Transit team. In this role, you will bring a balanced blend of progressive design experience and project coordination/management expertise to support the successful delivery of complex, multidisciplinary Light Rail Transit or Freight Rail infrastructure projects. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented professional looking to further build their career within a global consultancy committed to innovation, sustainability, and technical excellence. In Canada, our Rail & Transit team supports some of the region's most transformative programs, partnering with clients such as Metrolinx, major municipalities, and freight rail stakeholders to deliver integrated, sustainable mobility and transportation solutions.

Role accountabilities:

In this role you will provide essential coordination support across all phases of project delivery, from initial planning through to successful implementation, while also contributing a strong understanding of progressive design development for Light Rail Transit or Freight Rail projects. You will assist Project Managers by supporting key project controls, such as scheduling activities, tracking costs, and preparing regular progress reports, while coordinating design inputs and ensuring alignment between technical development and project delivery objectives. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate project documentation, including registers for risks, issues, and actions, as well as governance records that ensure compliance and transparency throughout the project lifecycle.

You will play a pivotal role in coordinating internal and external stakeholder meetings, ensuring the preparation of relevant materials and capturing key outcomes and action items. By tracking progress against established project milestones, design deliverables, and interface requirements, you will proactively identify and highlight potential risks, delays, or coordination issues, enabling the project team to respond swiftly and effectively. Your support will extend to contract administration, procurement processes, and document control protocols, helping to maintain the integrity and efficiency of project operations across both design and delivery functions.

Furthermore, in this role you will facilitate collaboration across multidisciplinary teams-including engineering, systems, program management, and design disciplines-by promoting effective communication and shared understanding of project objectives. You will contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, leveraging digital tools, innovative delivery methodologies, and lessons learned from Light Rail Transit or Freight Rail project environments to enhance project performance and outcomes. Your commitment to supporting both day-to-day operations and strategic improvements, while bridging design progression with project coordination and management needs, will be key to driving successful project delivery and fostering a culture of excellence within the team.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Project Management, Business, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in a project coordination and engineering design, ideally within rail, transit, or major infrastructure environments
  • Strong understanding of project delivery frameworks and controls
  • Proficiency in tools such as MS Project, Primavera P6, Excel, SharePoint, and collaboration platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, delivery-focused environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across teams and clients
  • Familiarity with Ontario transit programs and agencies (e.g., Metrolinx, TTC) is considered an asset
