Job description

Job Title: GENERAL LABORER
Department: Parks and Recreation
Reports To: Various Supervisors/Managers/Crew Leaders as assigned
Directs Work Of: NA
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Effective Date(s): 2011; 2017; PG 1/1/2019
EEO-4 Classification: Service Maintenance
Normal Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Normal Work Days: Monday through Friday
Education/Experience
Education: High school diploma or the equivalent preferred. Valid driver's license required. Experience: Knowledge of proper use of hand tools, chain saws, lawn equipment and ability to safely operate light-duty truck.
Position Summary
This is an entry level laborer position that performs manual work in a variety of settings including building cleaning and maintenance, grounds maintenance, trash/sanitation collection and city parks/property maintenance. Utilizes a variety of hand tools, shovels, lawn maintenance equipment, and chain saws and may drive light-duty trucks in the performance of duties related to this general laborer work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other related duties may be assigned.
Performs grounds maintenance work: mowing/maintaining park and open space areas, planting lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers. Seeds, fertilizes, waters, and provides pest and weed control. Removes snow from streets, walks and other paved areas.
Performs routine maintenance on equipment used in performing work, i.e. oil changes, blade repair/replace, small engine repair, routine automotive repairs; maintains and adjusts specialized turf care equipment and tools.
Performs routine maintenance and repairs of City buildings/facilities maintain clean/orderly condition; Collects and disposes solid waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter; cleans floors/stairs/offices; replaces light bulbs; replenishes restroom supplies; assists with routine repairs to plumbing and electrical systems, buildings, facilities and equipment.
Assists with the installation, removal and storage of equipment, tables, chairs and displays used in special programs and/or city sponsored events. Prepares and maintains athletic fields and aquatic center equipment/pool for public use.
Assists with the construction of new facilities and maintenance of streets/city property: performs clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work. Repairs pot holes. Assists with making and repairing City street signs.
Works with sanitation collection drivers to collect and remove trash/refuse from City streets, residential neighborhoods and businesses.
Operates a variety of equipment, hand and power tools including but not limited to lawn mowers, weed eaters, tree trimmers, chainsaws, shovels, and light-duty trucks

• Basic operation of various power and hand tools including, but not limited to lawn mowers, tree trimmers, weed eaters, chain saws, shovels and light-duty trucks
• Basic understanding of routine plumbing and electrical repairs
• Basic understanding of Safety rules and safe equipment operation.
Licenses:
Possess a valid driver's license.

Requires ability and willingness to work after normal work hours and to work any shift, holidays and weekends if needed.
