Physical Education Teacher (26/27 School Year)

Brooklyn Laboratory Charter Schools

Brooklyn, NY • On-site

$64K - $104K/yr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement

Job description

Teaching at Brooklyn Lab is unlike teaching in a traditional environment. Our teachers know the individual strengths and areas for growth of each of their scholars. By design, our schools are small communities where every scholar is known.
In addition to teaching their course, our faculty understands the value of collaboration. They share best practices across the network, mentor young educators who serve as Small Group Instructor, get and implement feedback from coaches and their instructional lead, and work as a team to provide their scholars with a high-quality education.
Our focus on the whole scholar and our school community has established Brooklyn Lab as one of the best schools in the country for academic growth - adding two and three years of academic growth on average for our scholars. We invite you to be part of a transformation in education and to inspire a diverse group of scholars with a lifelong love of learning.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide direct instruction in rigorous, developmentally-appropriate PE lessons aligned with state and national physical education standards;
  • Commit to preparing every student for high school graduation and a lifetime of physical literacy, healthy habits, and active living;
  • Facilitate student learning and differentiation across grades by designing skill progressions, leading small-group instruction, and conferencing with students on individual fitness and skill goals;
  • Implement frequent formative assessments (skills checks, participation, effort) in addition to summative fitness assessments (e.g., FitnessGram or comparable benchmarks), and analyze student performance data to inform and personalize instruction;
  • Draft teacher reports to contribute to comprehensive individual education plans (IEPs), including adapted PE goals and accommodations for students with physical, sensory, or cognitive needs;
  • Lead and own results of advisories that meet daily;
  • Constantly review student-level fitness and skill data to inform instruction and student groupings;
  • Serve as an "inclusion-for-all" ambassador to ensure integrated co-teaching, adapted PE, and support is evident across the school;
  • Curate lessons via a mix of teacher-created activities and digital/on-line supports (e.g., fitness tracking apps, heart rate monitors, instructional video resources);
  • Design and deliver curriculum spanning fitness, movement competency, and sport-specific skills, building developmentally-appropriate progressions across MS and HS grade bands;
  • Promote physical literacy, safety, and healthy lifestyle habits, including instruction on nutrition, injury prevention, and long-term fitness planning;
  • Manage equipment, facility logistics, and safety protocols for large groups in active, gymnasium, and outdoor settings.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A bachelor's degree in physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, or a related field; Master's Degree preferred
  • High GPA in an academic major
  • Certification to teach in New York State in the subject area to be taught
  • At least three years of teaching experience with exceptional results
  • Experience teaching in urban and/or low-income areas preferred
  • Commitment to LAB's mission and academic objectives - a demonstrated belief that all students, regardless of background and incoming ability, can achieve at high levels
  • Record of using data in the classroom and driving student outcomes with students of similar populations
  • Commitment to education standards, frequent formative assessment, and accountability
  • Belief in a structured, predictable environment for children
  • Ability to be the authority in the classroom and set rules for students
  • Willingness to build relationships with students and families
  • A "can do" attitude and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Comfort with accountability and ability to absorb feedback and engage in self-improvement
  • A desire to make others successful
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and optimism
  • An understanding that the first years of school start-up require commitment, hard work, and hours beyond normal teaching positions
  • Ability to reflect and adjust to a dynamic and rapidly changing environment

Whenever possible, LAB seeks to hire Teachers certified in special education and/or teaching English to speakers of other languages, in addition to the subject they teach, to provide additional support to students with special needs and/or limited English proficiency.
COMPENSATION
Salary range: $67,789 - $104,578, commensurate with experience and education.
In addition to competitive salaries, LAB benefits package includes:
  • 80% cost share of health, dental, and vision plans
  • Short & long-term disability for eligible employees
  • Free life insurance benefit of salary (up to a maximum of $100,000)
  • Premium gym membership discount to LIFETIME GYM nationwide
  • Pre-tax commuter and parking benefits
  • 100% matching contribution up to 6% to a LAB 403(b) retirement plan
  • An individual professional development allowance per school year

BECOME BROOKLYN LAB!
Brooklyn LAB is an equal opportunity employer that welcomes candidates of diverse backgrounds and is committed to equal access for those with disabilities in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
