Job description

Lifeguard Instructor

Status: Full-time/Part Time, Seasonal, hourly (non-exempt)

Reports to: Pool Manager / Director of Fitness

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Work will primarily be performed outdoors with temperatures that may range from 70 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit during summer months. There will be exposure to loud noises and sustained elements. Must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and participate in vigorous physical activities. General standing, walking, lifting, pushing and pulling movements are required.

Schedule: Candidates must be able to work during pool hours of operation from 9:00am to 8:00pm, 7 days a week. Pool opening and closing shifts require earlier or later start or end times. Shifts are up to 8 hours per day and up to 40 hours per week. Weekend and holiday availability is required.

Job Summary

The Nelson Golf & Sports Club (“The Nelson”) is a fine private country club offering premier amenities, including a world-class golf course, exquisite dining, state-of-the-art fitness facilities, and a vibrant social calendar. The Nelson offers competitive pay, uniforms, and employee meals to eligible employees.

Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming aquatic environment for Members and Guests at The Nelson’s resort-style pool facility. This role provides attentive supervision of the pool area while supporting a luxury, family-friendly atmosphere consistent with the Club’s service standards. In addition to aquatic safety, Lifeguards assist with maintaining pool readiness, organization, and overall presentation of the pool deck and amenities.

Job Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Lead and facilitate lifeguard in-service trainings as scheduled or assigned, ensuring team readiness and skill proficiency.
  • Teach, evaluate, and reinforce lifeguard competencies, including CPR/AED, First Aid, surveillance, and water rescue skills.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and guidance to lifeguards during assigned shifts, supporting adherence to safety protocols and service standards.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource for lifeguard staff, offering coaching, feedback, and support to maintain consistent performance.
  • Assist Management with monitoring lifeguard performance, training needs, and overall aquatic safety readiness.
  • Support emergency response coordination when needed, ensuring procedures are followed calmly and effectively.

Aquatic Safety & Supervision

  • Provide continuous surveillance of pool activities to ensure Member and Guest safety.
  • Monitor and supervise aquatic activities, including supervising swimmers, swimmer safety, water rescue, and staying alert to changing weather and water conditions.
  • Enforce all safety regulations and report unsafe conditions or violation of pool rules and regulations to management.
  • Enforce pool rules and safety guidelines in a professional, courteous manner.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, administering first aid or water rescue as needed.
  • Maintain current lifeguard, CPR/AED, and first aid certifications at all times.

Member Experience & Service

  • Greet Members and Guests and foster a friendly, approachable pool environment.
  • Support a luxury, family-friendly atmosphere while ensuring safe behaviors.
  • Provide general assistance and answer questions regarding pool use and amenities.

Pool Area Readiness & Upkeep

  • Prepare the pool facilities and surrounding environment for daily opening, ensuring a clean, safe, and guest-ready presentation.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the pool deck, furniture, and towel stations throughout the shift.
  • Monitor water conditions and pool area hazards and report concerns promptly.
  • Assist with setup and monitoring during pool events and high-attendance days.
  • Perform comprehensive closing duties to secure, clean, organize and reset the pool environment to Club standards.

Standards & Compliance

  • Follow all Club policies, health regulations, and aquatic safety standards.
  • Complete required incident reports and daily checklists accurately and timely.
  • Maintain professional appearance and uphold The Nelson service standards.
