Life Cycle Analyst information

What is a life cycle analyst?

A Life Cycle Analyst evaluates the environmental impacts of a product, process, or service throughout its entire life cycle, from raw material extraction to disposal. They use life cycle assessment (LCA) tools to identify areas for improvement in sustainability and efficiency. Their work helps businesses and organizations make data-driven decisions to reduce carbon footprints and resource consumption. Life Cycle Analysts often collaborate with engineers, policymakers, and sustainability teams to implement eco-friendly strategies.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a life cycle analyst?

A Life Cycle Analyst typically gathers and analyzes data on the environmental impacts of products, processes, or systems throughout their entire life cycle, from raw material extraction to final disposal. Daily tasks often include working with LCA software to create detailed models, preparing sustainability reports, and consulting with engineers, product designers, or supply chain professionals to gather accurate data. Life Cycle Analysts also review emerging environmental regulations and industry best practices to ensure compliance and improvement opportunities. Collaboration is frequent, as the role often requires working closely with multidisciplinary teams to drive sustainable product development and business strategies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a life cycle analyst?

To thrive as a Life Cycle Analyst, you need a strong foundation in life cycle assessment (LCA), data analysis, and environmental science, usually supported by a relevant degree such as environmental engineering or sustainability. Familiarity with LCA software tools like GaBi, SimaPro, or OpenLCA as well as ISO 14040/44 standards and potentially LEED or other sustainability certifications is important. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are critical for accurately evaluating environmental impacts, collaborating across teams, and informing sustainability strategies in various industries.
